2.) Japan doesn't like foreign products

Really?

Not sure about this.

When I was in Tokio, I noticed that many things looked western. People there also dress like in the west.

Japan has the most mcdonalds outside of the usa i think I read somewhere. You do see a lot of them. Just an example.

Yes Japan is a very fashionable country so you'll find they "absorb and adapt" a lot of foreign things.

However when it comes to technology Japan is itself a leader, so they are loyal, they tend to consider their own products superior and better taylored for them.

iPhone is interesring though.  Initial adoption of iPhone was really really slow in Japan, but now it's become huge.

My guess is Japan is the tie breaker.

Once PS3 became very affordable, people with 360s purchased PS3 to play the backlog of great games. That's what I did.

I remembered at the start of the gen no one thought the 360 would be anywhere close to PS3 and the Wii was written out completely. Most thought the PS3 would dominated while the other two would battle for scraps. Then something happened and the Wii took the world by storm with it's unique gameplay. Even the grannies were getting into it. The 360 dominated North America and UK and did much better in Europe and Japan compared to it's predecessor but never really caught on. PS3 was slow initially but once the prices dropped, it really took off in those territories but in NA, it never caught up to the 360. So the Wii really surprised everyone. The 360 did much much better than anyone predicted and the PS3 while gaining 2nd place was not where anyone expected it to be. It was their generation to win and the lowly Wii stole the trophy. Overall they all did very well.

Even though the xbox 360 had decent exclusives in it's early life, it faltered partially in the end because it stopped getting alot of relevant games to combat the much stronger playstation brand.

You're saying that the 360 went wrong when MS almost tripled its user base and with the help of a ps3 launching at 4billion pounds it halved the user base of the ps3 in comparison to the previous generation? What are you smoking OP?

By that logic, SNES is an fail too since it lost market share to Sega.

By that logic the SNES was not as successful as the NES in terms of hardware sales because of Sega's increased competition, which is true. That doesn't make the SNES a failure.

By that logic the PS3 was not as successful as the PS2 in terms of hardware sales because of Microsoft's and Nintendo's increased competition, which is true. That doesn't make the PS3 a failure.

Yes, that is my point.

This gen had xbox's name written all over it. They dominated nearly every aspect yet somehow they are third - or close second.

I'm not saying they failed this gen - far from, but how did they not dominate (of at least playstation)

DA LIST (Feel free to add) of why xbox deserved to win!
- They released around a year earlier than playstation, so they had a year off being the only next gen console available.

- They had captured a lot of Sony's exclusives!

- Easier Hardware to work with
(and even though it was considered ever so slightly weaker than ps3, multiplats were equal if not better on 360 games)

- They had MULTIPLE IP's that sold in the multi-millions! Halo Fable Forza GOW. They didn't have many IP's that sold 1 or 2 million unlike quite a number of PS3's.

- A universally accepted better controller.

- They won the motion control war (against SONY, but hell, everyone lost that didn't they?)

- They had exclusive deals with the BIG games (COD, Skyrim)

- Minecraft for a year and a half before Sony
(I mean it sold flippin 10 million on 360, thats like alot of mountain dews!)

- Strong(er?) marketing
(I turn on comedy central and every day I was told buy a 360 for this or that, didn't see PS3 too often)

- More focus on products than Sony
(Well the hardware and entertainment division only needed to focus on 360 games (sometimes PC) whereas during 360's lifetime Sony had to handle games and hardware for PS2, Ps3, PSP and PsVita)

- Sitcoms and many other tv programmes, when they play games - it's 85% of the time (YES 85) xbox 360. Big Bang Theory with their Halo night, south park always said/had 360's, even Breaking Bad (Which is made by Sony Pictures) when Jesse is playing with that little kid.

- Games almost always shown off on 360's at press events (or PC's with 360 controller, still brand recognition for xbox)

- Cheaper price at launch compared to PS3 (599 US Dollahs! <3 KAZ)

- They seemed to make exclusive deals with indie games that sold Mega! Minecraft, fez, mark of the ninja, super meat boy, braid.
(Well four of those devs have had bad things to say about MS (not specifically xbox) in the past, and two of them are making (timed?) exclusive ps4 games

MORE TO COME BRO!

But somehow they didn't dominate....

Any theories?

1. bluray movie support.

2. No interesting games since forever (I only buy exclusives on consoles. I mean why would I play a shooter with a controller? its like playing a platformer with steering wheel)
2A) And they fucked up rare. They could have made a real PerfectDark and Banjo Racing (Diddy Kong Racing successor) and a real Banjo game etc. (I bought a 360 because Rare belonged to MS and I expected good games......)

2B) Also bought it because of all the exclusive JRPGs (or at least timed exlusives for a few years)   and then nothing..... (because japan hates foreign companies)

3 Reasons, all interconnected.

Kinect - created a divide between the fans. MS couldn't make games for both Kinect and non-Kinect owners, so what ended up happening is that the exclusive content was split. Half Casual, half core

Sudden stop of 3rd & 1st party exclusives - This relates to Kinect because 75% of 360 owners do not own a Kinect device, yet after 2009 75% of 360's games were Kinect exclusive. Why? Core gamers interested in Call of Duty started to migrate to PS3 (as shown by increasing CoD sales on PS3 with respect to 360 over the years).

Over-reliance of core franchises - After 2009, too many Halo's and Forza's. I mean in the last 5 years we've seen 4 Forza's, but how many Gran Turismo's have there been? 2. Gears of War ended at 3, but instead of making something new, 360 owners got a piss poor prequel. etc.

Price - Kinect was an excuse for MS to keep console prices high. While Sony kept cutting the price of the PS3, MS just made more expensive bundles with Kinect. So while 360 started well as the cheaper console, it's the same price as a PS3 now, which makes no sense since it has no Blu-Ray, no SSD, and less features.

-----

I'm starting to think, the only reason 360 did well in the first place was because it was cheaper. A big reason why I got a 360 instead of a PS3 in 2007 was because PS3 was $600. When PS3 matched 360 in price, PS3 sales soared, and now that PS4 has released, $100 cheaper then XBO, Sony is outselling MS in their home territories (US/UK).

Simply because of Europe. FIFA has always been the driving force for the PS brand in europe. At the start of the gen, FIFA wasn't so big. Then around 2010/11 FIFA got huge, so naturally everyone went to get a PS3.

I agree with Michael 5 few posts above. The 360 brand changed around 2010. From 2006 to 2009 it had a pretty good and varied list of 1st and 3rd party exclusives. After Kinect was a hit the influx of that varied list of exclusives stopped. The focus was on Kinect games and MS only relied on Halo, Forza, Gears for the core audience.

I actually got a 360 before a PS3, I had to have Bioshock, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Gears of War etc... I dont see that early 360 magic with the Xbone, Quantum Break, that Insomniac game, another Halo dont do it for me.
