| Mr Khan said: It is indeed a noble thing to provide unconditional aid, however you have to admit that it is very backhanded to say "I don't hate you, but you're going to burn." It is *wrong* of the religion to embrace this viewpoint, especially since it is based as it is out of a book of the Jewish bible that has been disregarded by modern Christendom in almost every other respect. Clearly there is a matter of choice in which parts of the bible Christians obey, so it is disingenuous to just say "it is repugnant to God, sorry, it's out of my hands but you're going to burn forever", since there's a lot of stuff that was supposedly an affront to the Lord that nobody bats an eye at. Christian homophobia is an anachronism. It has nothing to do with the core tenets of the faith and could easily be disregarded without creating any major theological contradictions (arguably the bigger contradiction is the pick-and-choose attitude towards Levitical laws). |
I think you are confusing Christians who mis-use the Bible with Christians who do not. No church should turn away those who live in sin because the principle teaching of Christianity is that we are all sinners. Nobody should judge another as that's God's job. (Mr. Robertson said that.) There is no picking or choosing. Just because Christians do not honor the punishments as given out in Leviticus does not mean they pick and choose. Jesus threw out some of the old law, and some He did not.
Speaking of picking and choosing, it's easy to take a narrow look at an entire religion over a few things that on the surface do not make sense to you. The bible was perhaps inspired by something divine but still written and translated by man who are fallible. I suggest you take the concerns you have to a priest or pastor and hear what they have to say. If you spend your time debating this stuff on the Internet you will likely not learn anything about it. (Unless, of course, you have no desire to learn something about it.)
I would also submit to you that Phil was all-inclusive in his description of sexual immorality. In fact he mentioned heterosexuals who sleep around, too. BTW, homosexuality is listed in the new testament as being forbidden. Though some of it of course is under debate.
