That's not even close to the same thing. It would only be similar if Nintendo distanced themselves from the actual developer by either firing them or suspending them. This would happen in almost any workplace.

If Mario went on a rant that offended a wide swath of people, and Nintendo decided to distance themselves from him by replacing him with Luigi. They never cancelled DD, they just suspended the guy that was running his mouth. This is not unusual (see: Paula Dean).
