Forums - Politics - Gay marriage in... Utah? Update: on hold for now

Fascinating.

It seems like what ironically "doomed" conservatives in this case was that they passed a law specifically making it illegal when previously there just wasn't a legal standard for it.

Which is pretty funny really.

Had their not been a specific law specifically banning something that couldn't of happened in the first place it probably would of never went to court.

This is partially true.  While some laws have existed for a long time, a lot of the state laws and state constitutional amendments against gay marraige were pushed through after the Massachusetts supreme court decision to allow it based on the Massachusetts constitution.  So a lot of states decided they had better get something into their constitutions so a similar court decision didn't happen in their state.

You know, I was just reading about prop 8 and evidently I have been thinking about this wrong.  I thought the supreme court overturned prop 8, but all they did was dismiss the case because the state was no longer representing the case.  If this utah law goes all the way to the supreme court, it would actually be the first time the supreme court ruled on the issue.  If the supreme court finds in favor of gay marriage, it would in fact overturn all of these amendments in the states.  Should be interesting few months...

Lol, yep.  Prop 8 is going to end up being one of the greatest thing to ever happen to the equal marriage movement.

Well that, but i meant more that there was a specific law banning it in utah.

Had their not been, i'm not sure the lawsuit could of been filed, since they weren't being denied gay marriage by law.

Gay marriage just didn't exist.

Do you honestly feel people scared of homosexuals? The idea is to protect marriage not because we want gays dead or hate gays.

Marriage doesn't need protection. Homosexuality does not threaten it.

I would beg to differ. What you are doing is re-defining marriage and rights to whatever someone personally feels. Why not allow multiple wives and husbands? Why not allow marriage between animals and humans? Why not with children under the age of 13? Why not with anything. If you re-define basic rights as anyone could do whatever they like because it's right than you have to question why can't just create my own rights. Why are your rights more true than mine?  Why is anything not a right. Your left with everything relative and nothing meanings anything because it's meaningless like Nietzsche would say.

Is human rights a man made idea in which is completely subjective and if so why not just say your opinion is as neutral as the opposite opinion? Example, did the nazi do anything wrong because they believe humans rights were for there specific people oppose to you who felt the opposite? Is it just a difference in moral opinions on human rights?

Your whole argument is so flawed it's not even funny.

Man - Woman

Man - Man

Woman - Woman.

2 adults that love each other and are in a consensual relationship.

How you jump from

Man - Woman - Woman

Man - Animal

Ect, is disgusting and weak. You know it's not at all comparable but you need to find a way to justify "I don't like it" plain and simple.

Marriage is not threatened by gay people, I would say the millions of straight couples that divorce each year are more a threat of devaluing it, and even then it's not a big deal.

I suggest you read what I am saying, instead of thinking your reading someone else's argument.

My argument is a re-defining rights based on nothing but the idea that morals are subjective.

I used a large range of examples besides animals in other post and in this post.

Example:polygamy, murder, or any human right issue. You literally ignored that my first general board point which was on polygamy and nothing on beastility. There is literally one sentence on beasitly. This is example of someone reading one part of a writing and reading everything as a whole from one sentence. Did you not read anything beyond that point or even before?

What about my main points on the problems of subjective morals and how you can't get ANY moral truths? Every other sentence was based around this and that one point was just a supporting sentence.

"2 adults that love each other and are in a consensual relationship."

If you read my most recent posting and even the one your responding to you will see why are problems with your defense. Why two? Why consensual? Based on who definition? Why are they objectively right?

If you read on my post instead of reading on part you will see what was the actual theme of the discussion. My argument isn't that gay marriage is the problem, my problem is justify your personal beliefs as moral truths based on nothing but subjectivity.  Seems many on here have some belief of higher moral ground on the issue but when it you examine it is no more true the opposition. Basically, I'm saying the effect of morals being meaningless is because of secularism(relativism), not because of gay-marriage. Gay-marriage would be only the effect and effects aren't causes.

Seem you didn't even understand what I was arguing because you jump to conclusions based assume coming into the discussion. I encourage you read what I wrote clearly and stop to ask yourself what is he saying instead of what you assume I'm going say. I also would like your answer to my actual poin in this:

"If you read my most recent posting and even the one your responding to you will see why are problems with your defense. Why two? Why consensual? Based on who definition? Why are they objectively right?"

"I use the word traditional as ''standard marrige''   in this context between a man and a woman.  Traditional in this sense means the christian (not jewsih) marrige - you know, the religion on which the entire western morals and laws are based on."

This is absolutely false.

Well, gee, when you put up a compelling argument like that, maybe i am wrong...

"I never said anything about civil rights, did I?  I also never mentioned any churches or any religious institutions at all. You are trying to spin this into anther agonazing gay marrige debate. Do you get a boner by attacking church and religion? I was simply stating that  A STATE has a right to defend a traditional marrige and its laws, federal goverment has no say in Utah's laws regarding gay marrige."

This is true right now, but can definitely change.  A supreme court ruling would be required to be followed by the states.

I dont see this happening any time soon. Gay marrige is illegal in more than 30 states, huge majority of the country. Marrige is still responsabilty of state goverment

"You do know that LDS church donated almost 1 billion dollars in over 180 countries around the world, right? How much did your beloved LGBT lobby spend on helping innocent, poor and sick people around the world instead of promoting their agenda?"

Since when is wanting equal rights an agenda.  You do realize how badly gay people have been treated in the past.  Labeled mentally ill and experimented upon to "cure" them.  Many had electroshock, some were lobotomized. Being arrested was common.  They were denied employment and housing.  It was real persecution and oppression, not this fake "war on christmas" crap.

Oh my God, give me a fucking break. There are literally BILLIONS of people out there who have it  A LOT WORSE than gay people in Utah, or anywhere in the West actually. And none of that stuff actually still takes place in US, nor does gay marrige law has anything to do with it, so its a lame strawman, at best. LDS church actually spends most of their money actually helping people and making world better place, whereas the LGBT lobby only gives a fuck about their agenda and hunting down anyone that doesnt abide by their views and beliefs. They'd rather spend their time boyocting Chick- Fil- A and making sure their buisness closes down instead doing actually meaningful in the world.

And the LDS church donating money around the world doesn't excuse what they do to people that leave the church (shunning) or the money they spent trying to deny gay couples equal rights.

They dont see marrige as a right, but tradition, or holy bond between 2 opposite sexes. Regardless, they are still widely known as probably the nicest group of Christians in US, and have done a lot more good in the country than LGBT lobby ever did

Ok, So you couldn't answer my quetions.

Because you are trying to corner me into another bullcrap gay marrige moral debate, where you'd  just repeat how much of a vile person while constantly shiting on Christianity (and religion in general), whle using the word bigot 50 times per sentence. Been there, done that

But I'll will answer yours:  Because it is a complete and deceptive lie.  It is not suported by Biblical teachings, it's only made up by people against civil rights as some attempt to spin that other people have their families recogized is somehow an attack on them.   (I points out lying is a sin.)

Marrie between a man and a woman is not supported by the Bible?

As far at the LGBT lobies spending monies, do you think people should not be allowed to defend themselves when disturbed people try to control others and go after eleminating and removing their rights?  What should women do if someone wanted to remove their right to vote, work or own property?  Just sit there?

Yeah man, queers have it real hard in United States. They cant even vote, work, or have property...oh wait, its just another stupid strawman that LGBT lobby loves to use to make their ''struggle''  similar to segregation and slavery that Blacks had to suffer thru. Its absolutely disgusting. Its no wonder why African American community is usually against LGBT lobby when they try to mix in their history, to make it comparable so that they can promote their agenda

The Morman spend million promotion their own agenda, pretty fancy to call it 'charity.'  Do you realize how many cultures they have wipped out to incorporate into their own?

If their agenda is helping those in need, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, sheltering the homeless, helping the poor, I say let them promote their agenda. It seems like a much better spending of resources and money than organizing protests against Chick Fill A because their CEO has a different belief than them

They have even converted Ann Frank something like 9 times to try to make her Mormon, thus attempting to erase her Jewish herritage.

I never implied they were perfect did I?

Also, you don't seem to understand US law.  Federal law, as it was in this case, trumps state law.  A state can not make a law that says women do not have the right to vote - but could have a 'domestic recomendation' because Federal laws guarantee the right of women to vote.

...so why cant queers marry in over 30 states in country? I mean, DOMA is dead, isn't it?

How? Over ten states have legalized beastlity and there are actually more states that legalized then in previous history. Guess how? Through the courts. Apparently the animals have enough consent for me to have some fun with them. Let's name states. Florida, Hawaii,Iowa,Kectucky,Louisiana,Missouri,Arizona,Colorado, Connecticut,Montana, etc.

Could you provide a link for this please, because I cannot find this information anywhere. Also, beastiality is a misdemeanor in Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Colorado, it's a felony in Arizona and it's a felony and a misdeamonor in Connecticut. So your list of states where beastiality is legal isn't all that accurate.

It's not my fault that you are not that educated.

"Oh my God, give me a fucking break. There are literally BILLIONS of people out there who have it  A LOT WORSE than gay people in Utah, or anywhere in the West actually. Did I say it was happening now?  But we are only talking about 40 years ago when this was happening and it wasn't until 2003 when the supreme court finally put an end to all of these laws that made homosexuality illegal.  And there are many gay youths that commit suicide because of not being accepted by family and friends.  And talk about a strawman, why should I give a fuck about how much the LDS cult gives worldwide to indoctrinate.  LDS and other religions spend far more time and money pushing their agenda than any LGBT lobby.

"They dont see marrige as a right, but tradition, or holy bond between 2 opposite sexes. Regardless, they are still widely known as probably the nicest group of Christians in US, and have done a lot more good in the country than LGBT lobby ever did"

Bullshit they don't see it as a right.  Take it away from them and they would sure change their tune.  Marraige has many legal ramifications that have nothing to do with religious traditions, so that argument is irrelevant anyways.  No one is even talking about taking away any of their "traditions", just don't force them on other people that don't agree with them.

You should go talk to anyone that has left the LDS church to find out how "nice" they are.  It's a cult, you leave and you are shunned, even by your immediate family.

Wiki page is outdated and never should be used as source.

http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2012/06/floridas_beastiality_law_doesn.php

You can legally have oral sex with animals. I could post all the other articles but to post for all states independently would be way to time consuming so I suggest you read: http://animallaw.info/statutes/stusfl828_01_29.htm#s126. If it is blank that means Any sexual act is ok. Some you have read clearly because of the fact you have cases where some form of sexual act is ok. Basically a case by case. The problem is you are not allowed to rape/ or have sexual conduct with animals but to have oral sex if done onto you,is ok. In some states like Florida. Take that for whatever that means as apparently there is some difference. I suggest you read clearly all the articles and see for yourself what exactly is and isn't allowed.

If you look at the list I provided there over 10 states where it is completely ok. Some where unto yourself it is ok'd.
