Nintendo never went for the casuals, they tried to be innovative with the wii but failed to attract the "core" gamers or so called "loyal customers" that would become big fans. The 360 gained a lot of fans last generation, and that is helping microsoft a lot with the one.

Nintendo's biggest problem is that the only people who are interested in nintendo style games are nintendo fans. Their software line ups aren't appealing to other gamers compared to what the x1/ps4 will have.

That's what I believe also. They found great success with the Wii doing this and then went a different direction with the Wii U.

When I saw the Kinect comments I naturally presumed it was S.T.A.G.E..

I honestly don't see that much in kinect. Tell me Puggsly, be honest with yourself. How are the games on kinect ? Alot of them don't look very fun to me. If we could just get a killer app like Halo or something I would say differently but it's getting alot of bad games and microsoft really isn't supporting it properly if you ask me. This is like microsoft's ps vita no offence.

Sort of.

It's utter nonsense.

The suggestion that there are about 80-160 million dedicated gamers out there, but Nintendo never sell any of their systems to any of them, is just ludicrous. The PS2 sold just as much to "teh cazualz" as the Wii did. What was different about the Wii was that it also sold to people who wouldn't otherwise have bought a gaming console at all, and sparked an interest in games amongst those people.

Some of those who bought a Wii will be satisfied with it, and won't upgrade. Others, however, will buy a new gaming system at some time in the near future. Why not now? Because there's no rush for these people. They don't need to buy systems on day 1, they aren't buying systems because they're "flashy and new", as the so-called "hardcore gamer" does. They're buying systems because a particular title has captured their interest.

With the Wii, many had their interest captured by Wii Sports. No equivalent title is on the Wii U yet. As such, the Wii U is currently selling to those who would have bought a gaming system anyway, as is the PS4 and XBO. As the Wii demonstrated, it only takes one game to capture the attention of the mainstream, and Nintendo is best-placed to create that game, due to their approach to gaming.

Dedicated gamers make up a very small portion of the install base of video game consoles.

What I also found hilarious was the assertion that, in Gen 6, Sony and MS were, collectively, the main forces, with Nintendo "picking up the table scraps". Never mind that the Xbox sold about the same number of units as the Gamecube did. Apparently, Sony had about 150 million fans as a "stable fan base"... and so, 360+PS3 is that fan base, spread across two consoles. Completely ignoring multiple-console owners, of course.

You must be careful when STAGE is lurking, as his theories can be triggered by even the most pedestrian posts. Even though I usually read the entirety of his posts, I never actually comprehend what I'm reading, though I can tell it was really unique. When I'm done, I usually feel like I've stepped into another dimension.

Yes I agree with it. Lots of people who bought a Wii won't be buying a console this gen.

I knew several people who would never buy game console's like my girlfriend's parents and my cousins (two girls) who own a Wii, but they are not interested in a Wii U. Wii was a fun thing a few years ago, that time has passed.

Playstation/XBox market will basically remain the same just with a different split, instead of say 80 million for both like this generation looks like, maybe more like 100 million PS4s and 65 million XB1s.

PS4 - 100 million

XB1 - 65 million

Wii U - 22 million

3DS - 85 milion

Vita - 15 million

Is how I'm now viewing this gen playing out.

I genuinely had fun with a several Kinect games. Like Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures, Fable: The Journey, and Gunstringer. Forza 4's Kinect support worked suprisingly well, I am disappointed they didn't bring that to Forza 5.

I don't think Kinect will ever get what core gamers consider a killer app. But it has offered unique experiences gamepad games haven't delivered. It isn't for everyone, but there is certainly audence for that style of gaming.

I agree, MS hasn't given Kinect as much support as I'd like. But now they're putting it in every box so its a safe bet it'll get more support down the road.

How do you know that this is a safe bet ? Despite the fact that the original iteration had sold around 30 million, what happened to the rest of the kinect game sales ? The only reason people are buying kinect is because of kinect adventures. Kinect sports and dance central seem okay on it but alot of the software is bombing and flopping. We need microsoft to put out relevant software for it so that PS360 gamers stop ignoring the relevance just like they stopped ignoring the WII. Kinect has potential but if microsoft does nothing but give worthless software in the eyes of the masses then how does microsoft expect to expand the gaming audience ? They need to try harder much like nintendo did with the WII.

I don't agree with any of this. In fact, I would argue that the big reason for PS4 and Xbox One's success is pure, manipulative marketing. Xbox COMPELS you because you see it everywhere around you. It sponsors sodas, fast food, football, soccer.... it's literally everywhere. It's so saturated that I'm sick of seeing it. PS4 is not so spread out, but the message is very compelling. Both had great, powerful marketing campaigns. What about the Wii U?

It failed on all levels in terms of marketing. Spend the money, take out a few ads during football games or at least on main broadcast channels that focus on young adults having fun, not children with families. That's what they did with Wii back in 2006 (anyone remember?) and it took off, bolstered by the curiosity surrounding the Remote and motion controls.

I was in Target today, and saw three big marketing fails. First, the signs above the Wii AND Wii U software say Wii U, with no distinguishing marks. A casual person, having not been exposed to the marketing I mentioned above, would ask what the difference was (lo and behold, the man in the aisle asked what the difference was between the Wii and Wii U version of a game). Second, the Wii and Wii U consoles are bunched together on the shelves, close together. There is no identifier making it clear that one is newer and shinier. And the freaking Wii Mini is sitting right above the Mario/Luigi Deluxe set. Finally, the demo station set-up is hard to navigate and by attempting to give passers-by options instead of catering a focused, awesome experience, looks confusing and uninteresting.

So, on topic, NO. It has nothing to do with the fad or casuals moving on. Casuals have NO AWARENESS WHATSOEVER of the Wii U or what it is, and as much as I love Nintendo, they utterly have failed to react properly to this. The software library is there, and growing. Now, make people aware of it! Jeez. You would think it is common sense.
