Hm, I had to Google it, but apparently you can't. I thought PS4 was B/C, my bad.

I never sell consoles anymore, and I'd advise against it because at some point, you're GOING to want to play some of those old games and you're GOING to wish you still had your PS3.

My advice? Be patient, and save up.

I want you to get a Wii U but not at the expense of your PS3. Don't you have any good games you want to go back and play? Don't you need a spare Blu Ray player?

Keep your PS3, the library has become so cheap and versatile now. You would be crazy to sell it

The Wii U is an excellent console and well worth the money if you like Nintendo's games. 

Of the series you mentioned, Mario Kart and Smash are due out next year, Kart quite early on, in Spring. (Northern Hemisphere Spring, that is) 

The biggest reason to get one right now is the superb Super Mario 3D World.

As for trading your PS3, how often do you play it? Are there games on it you feel you won't be able to do without?

I would wait a while. Mario Kart won't be coming for at least three months. I suppose if you have a PS4, you're covered for MGSV and Destiny and stuff. Not interested in Dark Souls II, eh?

Still, there's no hurry to go out and get a Wii U if the first game you want is Mario Kart, not coming till Spring.
