Microsoft undermined the first sale doctrine. Look it up. Understand your rights as a consumer. DRM alienates the used market if you take it to a certain extent and that is one of the major things that makes console gaming special opposed to PC gaming, which basically has zero right to resale because of the fully digital and code-based form. If Microsoft put the paywall up they and Gamestop would've had some issues and a larger sum of people than you think would've defected to Sony on principle.

You're right to an extent, I physically cannot resell a game in my Steam collection.
However I do have the right to sell my entire Steam account with it's 300+ games to someone else. :)

With the prices as low as they are, especially during a sale, reselling doesn't even cross my mind on Steam.
Steam's DRM has done more good than harm for the PC industry though. - Something that no one can really dispute, it solved all the fragmentation and made the PC far more accessible to gaming, not to mention cheaper.

People also seem to have the idea that EULA's and Terms of Agreement's will override their basic consumer rights, which is simply not true, it's how I managed to get a refund for Battlefield 3 out of EA despite them at the time having a "no refund policy". - Thus taking it to "Consumer affairs" eventually got my refund and EA would have received a small fine. (EA were also kind enough to let me keep the game, go figure.)

Steam has found its way around the helplessness of non-centralized PC gaming to make it a community somewhat like console gaming but more gamer friendly. Its awesome. The only thing stopping the full power of EULA from being realized is the first sale doctrine, hence why Gamestop is still in business. EULA tries to deny full ownership of a game to the consumer. The game is the property of the creator and is only to be consumed by the consumer. That is the way they see it. In their eyes a single disc does not belong to you.

Microsoft has said they were gonna allow the reselling of used games, did they not?

If Sony sided with EA and Microsoft, console gamers would've been fucked. Give at least that much thanks to Sony regardless of how you feel about them. Microsoft drew a line in the sand and sided with EA. EA stepped back on Online passes because they thought Microsoft would succeed in their endeavors to bring DRM to consoles, but since Sony didn't pick sides and stayed true to their relationship with both consumers and EA, they consumers sided with Sony and EA backed away from both online passes and Microsoft to save face. Microsoft took the fall because of a leak that happened post Xbone reveal that let everyone on the net know about the DRM and the extent of which it would affect their ability to resell games. No one likes a paywall and Microsoft had the structure in place to impose it upon us. Chances are high right now that I will get the Xbone first because of KI and Titanfall so if they dont choose to screw me I'll follow through on that first purchase.

I don't need to give thanks to Sony for anything because the policies didn't affect me. And that's right, EA and the third party publishers were the ones pushing for DRM. Microsoft was put in a sticky situation because they wanted to please EA as well as the consumer the best way possible. That's why Xbox got all the exclusive content from EA because they did play nice with them. So stop blaming Microsoft for everything. Whatever that stuff is history now so let's stop talking about it please!

Um no...Microsoft did it of their own free will. EA only imposed online passes on us and removed it because they thought MS would succeed and DRM and paywalling us up the rear. Its because of Sony why they did not succeed. You dont need to thank them...they already had your back if you didnt want DRM regardless of what you think.

Microsoft supported the trading and selling of used games. And how is offline gaming a better deal? An internet connection enhances the experience of the Xbox. My Xbox is always online and i've never had a problem.

I'm very happy that YOU have never had a problem with your internet dying. But in some places, even countries like Scotland, the internet connections we get can be disasterous.

It's time for your country to get out of the stone age and get with the program. It's 2013, everyone should have a decent internet connection by now.

My country is out of the stone age deary. It's just the geographical location of Scotland. There's been an exodus from rural areas of late because the internet sucks so bad there.

Also, just going for a cheap shot, but the UK should get out of the stone age? Nice healthcare you got there ;)

The only one who's taking it up the rear is you, from Sony! You're so brainwashed into thinking Sony is your friend, they are not! They want your money just as bad as Microsoft does. The difference is Microsoft had the nerve to try the stuff. We discussed this matter before, did we not? At the end of the day, these are businesses and they need to make money to stay afloat, understand that.

Sony is taking us up the rear. So is Microsoft. The difference is that Sony is giving us a reach around and Microsoft isn't using lube.

I'm glad Microsoft attempted to try something "different" with an always internet connected device, turns out people just wanted more of the same.

However, the "DRM" would have brought with it some advantages such as sharing of digital games and not requiring those fancy shiny drink coasters, however to most the disadvantages outweighed the advantages.
Personally, I don't like the idea of a console being a brick without the internet, I like the idea of pulling it out in 20-30 years time and playing a few games, but I also do like the idea of being able to share digital games. (Which you can do on Steam.)

I never said Sony was my friend. I'm just telling it like it is. Everyone was grilling Sony hoping to god they wouldn't follow Microsoft down the path of DRM or else we would've all been screwed. Read the interviews since feburary. There were rumors about Xbone having DRM since before the year started and the rumors continued past the PS4 reveal and was outted after the Xbone launch when Microsoft did an interview with Cinema Blend which rocked the foundation of the internet scene. If Sony would've used DRM it would've fucked Gamestop for good or at least knocked out their sales considerably to hurt them and thus the second hand community. Being that Sony didn't and everyone saw that fans sided with Sony with an ovation at E3 they backed off of DRM. This was known as the Sony "Drops the mic" moment at E3. That is the sole reason why Sony won E3.

They literally dedicated a segment of their E3 to showing Microsoft how to treat consumers:

You might think I am kissing Sony's ass, but I am not. They could've just as easily been dicks  like Microsoft. They are responsible for why the Xbone has no DRM and I can buy it DRM free and I thank them. They might not always have had the gamers best interest at heart, but in this instance they did. This was very, very good for business.
