Forums - Nintendo - In a betting mood: I say Zelda U won't look like the 2011 tech demo

I like the Skyward Sword/Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask style. This is the proper evolution of the Link to the Past art direction, and how Zelda games should be.

Twilight Princess had a really bland and borderline generic art style. Windwaker looked too cartoonish. I don't think either should be repeated.

Hello everyone, I'm new in the forums (not that new... I was lurking for more than a year before I decided to sign in)
I don't want to bet, it is really hard to guess considering Nintendo's situation, history tell us that they don't make the games like the tech demo.

In my opinion, given the circumstances they might want to appeal to some broader audience showing something unique like they did with Wind Waker, I'm just crossing my fingers waiting for something that looks awesome! (please Nintendo surprise us with something really amazing!).

ps. Please excuse my poor english.

I'd have to disagree, personally. I think that if they go for, not necissarily a "photo-realistic" style, as that just wouldn't work for Zelda, but a "real-ish", semi-surreal look, similar to what they showed in the tech demo, but perhaps more lavish. I think if they go for that, if they go in that direction and have an "Epic HD Zelda" instead of "An HD Cartoony Zelda"...I just see that doing better, and appealing to more people who might want to pick up a Wii U to play it.

That's one of the reasons I hope they don't go cartoony; a cartoony Zelda would pretty much only appeal to the people who are going to buy a Wii U anyway.

A darker Zelda, however, would draw in thousands of buyers who would otherwise never touch Wii U.

It's vital to the console's success.

I doubt they'll go for a cartoony Zelda game again, seeing how they already have WW HD in that style. A new game in the same vein wouldn't be something I expect to happen. Also, Aonuma has been speaking about how much he wants Zelda U to be completely different all the time, so a new art direction would seem to be expected, imo.

How can it be a bet? Aonuma already confirmed!!!! that it won't look like the tech demo.

There was an interview somewhere in which Anouma said that the team will stick with Skyward Sword's style, because it's the perfect balance between toon and realistic (their words) for everyone.

That was some time ago. A quick Google reveals:

"Zelda producer Eiji Anouma has revealed that the next instalment of the acclaimed Legend of Zelda franchise for Wii U will feature an art style that hasn’t been seen before in a Zelda title. Anouma says that the art style will be neither ultra realistic, nor cartoony, but it will be something entirely new that has not seen in a Zelda game before. Anouma also revealed that the next Zelda title may feature downloadable content, but the content would have to be “worth it for the user.” Here’s what he had to say about the art style for the next Zelda.

“The thing about Zelda is we want everything to be unique, whether it’s the graphical presentation or the gameplay.”

“It has to be something you can’t see anywhere else. We wouldn’t want it to be ultra-realistic because you can see that elsewhere. But I can’t say that it’s going to be cartoony-realistic like you mentioned, the fantastic presentation that we’ve already done in the past. It will be something new.”

So there you have it folks. They're going for somewhere inbetween the two (again) but not quite like SS.

Good to know that nobody agrees with me about the whole Kingdoms of Amalur art style thing. Here I thought it delivered the best of both worlds (real and surreal) more so than the typical fantasy game.

Aonuma makes what HE WANTS and not what the FANS WANT.

Ehhh... he seems pretty open to fan criticism in all the press he does.

I wouldn't have believed this BS 20 years ago and I sure as Hell wouldn't believe it now. Aonuma is to Zelda fans what Sakamoto is to Metroid fans: Full of shit excuses, yet able to capture a few apologists who believe his "genius" isn't appreciated so they champion everyone of his efforts like it's gospel. His games are lame and by association the modern Zelda fan is as well. [/thread]

So... are u betting it will look better or worse than the tech demo?

It will of course be better. The system wasn't even out then and now it's been out for about a year (which means better optimization is higher of a chance of occuring makeing the game look better).

Yet, no game on Wii U even showed that quality...

It sounds to me like you are stating the bullshit you want to hear, and completely ignoring reality.
