Forums - Gaming - Resolution Wars & The Hypocracy of the Tech Crowd

Resolution is so important that the franchise with the lowest resolution sold the most games on PS360.

Oh my God this subject ... 1080p is better than 720p. How can that be difficult to understand? Regardless of how small your TV is or how far you sit away from your TV, you are talking about a product that is dearer and weaker. Stop with this frigin' pedantry and just face the facts. If you are buying a console mainly to play multiplats then obviously the PS4 is the console to buy. There's no 'ifs' and no 'buts' it's just OBVIOUS.

The PS5 Exists.

For gaming at least, resolution shouldn't be important. Because you play games for fun, not for eye candy visuals.

Umm why not both?? If visuals didnt matter we would still be playing games like pacman. Visuals are a large part of gam,es immersion factor and presentation, they do MAKE a difference. HAte seeing this nonsense about visuals mattering. BS they do. Obviously there are other factors, nbut graphics matter, always have,

The lengths people go in denial for a games console is scary lol. People are still arguing the x1 versions look better despite mnot a shred of evidence and every site who has played both say the ps4 version is CLEARLY the better looking of the 2.

Who needs resolutions when you have distance!!!

Let me be honest...

I can't discern any differences between 720p and 1080p in SMARTPHONES. Anything above 300 dpi is beyond my eye vision. But when you talk about about 1080p on a 30+ inch screen, you have to be BLIND not to see any difference.

The problem is not "to see no difference". It is how much this should matter to you. There comes the GEEK HYPOCRISY. I just talked to a friend, finishing his PhD from IT Department, and he couldn't wait to upgrade from his Galaxy S3 to S4. I asked him why. He promptly said, it is many megahertz, this much resolution etc. I countered,

"Can you really feel some those differences, or rather, those are simply technical masturbation to you?"

He just had a geeky itch and had to have the most fancy tech. Ok, I understand it, everyone has their own obsessions...

Reading those "1080p is barely noticeable", "not such a big deal", "you need to use a magnifier" articles made me think...

Dear Techno-Geek Sites

* If 1080p with a 225% difference doesn't make  a difference on a 30+ screen, then why the hell have you been claiming technical superiority or vast differences between Retina and 1080p displays on sub-5 inch screens?

* If 1080p with a 225% difference doesn't make  a difference, then why the hell have you been touting the new 4K resolutions. That shouldn't matter at all. If we are dealing with DIMINISHING RETURNS (I am an economics professor), then shouldn't be the difference from 720p to 1080p more important than from 1080p to 4K when there is hardly any infrastructure to utilize it?

* If 1080p with a 225% difference doesn't make  a difference, then why the hell have you been claiming "clear" and "significant" differences (over 5-20%) between PS3 and 360 resolutions? 225% difference MUST naturally be more important than 5-20%, whatever angle you look at it from.

* If 1080p with a 225% difference doesn't make  a difference, then why the hell have you been pushing the industry with much higher "retina" displays on tablets, notebook, and monitors, which are much smaller than an average TV set?

* One answer can be, "Well, the continuous action on a game usually masks the relative low resolution compared to a static screen"... Well then, why the hell would we need 60 fps? Wasn' it  you the hypocritical tech guys who have been pushing the industry also in this direction?

In my opinion,

High resolution makes a difference, more or less, but it does! And it is just RIDICULOUS to have sub-1080p resolution on an 50 inch screen in todays world with a future game console that will go on for 5-10 years, while even the freaking 5 inch smartphone in our pockets have 1080p resolution on them! SERIOUSLY NO EXCUSES.

Yes, maybe the difference isn't huge, yes maybe we are spoiled. Yes, maybe the gameplay is more important. But for God's sake, given everything else we have (smartphones, retina tablets, laptops), Full HD and 4K TVs around, any sub-par 1080p is UNACCEPTABLE. This is not 2006 anymore, this is the time frame of 2013-2020+

WE F***ING NEED THE 1080p on our TVs.

I play on a 65" TV, so if anyone is in a good position to comment on this I think I am.  Would I like 1080?  Of course.  But I would rather the developer make a game that they feel best represents their vision.  If that means using 900P or 720P then so be it.  I think 1080 should always be the target.  Just like when I golf, I think that EAGLE should always be my target.  Doesn't mean its going to always happen, nor does it make a birdie, or even par, a bad thing.

There is also a lot more to a system than just the graphics.  How about the online experience.  The games.  The other things it can do.  In my case, I like good games.  So I realized that over the course of a 5 year + console cycle I am just going to have to bite the bullet and buy all the consoles.  Hurts my wallet, but that is the only way I can get those games.

I think I am personally more concerned about the fact that if a NEXT GEN console can't even run a cross gen game at 1080p 60FPS, how the heck is it going to hold up in the future?

I get the whole gameplay is more important than graphics thing, but the reason you're buying next gen consoles in the first place is to have greater possibilities. Otherwise you could be playing on your SNES if the gameplay was still good enough. The point is, if a next gen console isn't even capable of running a barely next gen game at a decent standard above what current gen offers, what's the point of getting a next gen console? Might as well just stick to what we already have.

This is some good money we are investing, and I think it's only natural for any good consumer to want value out of their money. The easiest way to judge that "value" right now is to look at resolutions and frame rates a console can produce.

You have no idea!

I agree though, the hypocrisy of some tech websites is annoying and sad. TECH.WEBSITES.

1080p is the golden standard now when were speaking of next gen. 720p is subpar.

But I already think nextgen graphic are too low. I need PC graphics. Im gonna buy the AMD 280. Is that a good card?

Pretty good card. Will play COD: Ghosts in 1080p. Better cards are coming next year. So it is better to wait but every year brings better cards i guess. Upgrade when Witcher 3 comes out as that seems your kind of game (monsters and beasts as such :O). That is if you are not getting PS4Bone.
