I think the adjustment was bogus. Nintendo reported 6.17 a month ago.

Today in Nintendo History:

Nintendo held their last traditional E3 Press Conference. (2012)

Nintendo's E3 conference of 2012 was the end of an era. We'd already had a Nintendo Direct reintroducing the hardware a couple of days prior. It was the last time Nintendo held a regular press conference, as they have instead chosen to do Nintendo Directs from 2013 onwards. It was also the big E3 before the release of the Wii U. Though the Wii was still out, it was barely mentioned, and even the 3DS had limited time on the big stage, instead being shifted to a post-conference software showcase later on. So, how good was this E3 for Nintendo?

On a scale from 1 to 5, probably a 2 or so.

Let's start with the good that we saw that day, shall we? The conference started with an amusing sketch involving Miyamoto and Pikmin getting onto the stage. The final version of the Wii U GamePad, which is IMO the best controller Nintendo has made for hardcore gamers, was shown. Pikmin 3 was unveiled after a years-long hiatus.New Pikmin types were introduced, hinting at the great experience that was to come, and the uses of the GamePad were shown. Miiverse was first shown, and has since has already become a Nintendo staple. New Super Mario Bros U, though already shown last year, was now named and declared a real game rather than a demo. Wii Fit U was announced, and Reggie confirmed a meme. LEGO City Undercover was also elaborated upon. Finally, Nintendo Land was announced as this generation's answer to Wii Sports.

Support from 3rd parties like Warner Bros and Ubisoft was promised with games like Batman, Scribblenauts, ZombiU, Just Dance, Rayman Legends, and Assassin's Creed. Ports of Mass Effect, Tekken, Ninja Gaiden, and other games were also shown. Though come to think of it, Aliens: Colonial Marines never was released for the Wii U.Probably for the best. A few weird oddities like Sing Party, a kareoke game, were also shown.

As for the 3DS, between the main conference and the showcase latter that E3, it had a decent lineup. Mario games were the stars of the day, particularly New Super Mario Bros 2. Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon were also shown. All three games were elaborated upon, describing the themes that made these games stand out. 3rd party games included an Epic Mickey spinoff, Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, Scribblenauts, LEGO Batman 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3D.We also got a new Nintendo Video show called 3Diots. Let's forget that last part happened. Last, digital distribution of full retail games was announced, beginning with NSMB2.

This, however, is as good a place as any to start with why E3 2012 was, though not terrible, disappointing. First off, the 3DS lineup, though far from bare, was hardly overwhelmed with games. Early 2012 had been okay for the 3DS, with excellent games like Resident Evil: Revelations and Kid Icarus: Uprising, but the time from late March to E3 2012 had been barren. Although the lineup promised for 2012 was by no means terrible, it lacked some key games like Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing, which had already come out in Japan and came out later that year in Japan respectively. As it was, the 3DS would only have one major sales success (1+ million US sales) in 2012: New Super Mario Bros 2. For comparison's sake, 2011 and 2013 each had three (Super Mario 3D Land, MK7, and Ocarina 3D for 2011 and Pokemon, Luigi's Mansion, and Animal Crossing in 2013). The 3DS XL announcement could have made more excitement, but Nintendo saved that for a few weeks later.

As for the Wii U, it lacked something important. Not anything in particular; just something. As in anything that made the console really stand out. Nintendo Land lacked the "wow" factor of Wii Sports in 2006, and NSMBU, though rarely called a bad game, did not appear to truly require the Wii U to exist. Heck, neither would have looked too out of place on the original Wii. The games that truly seemed to be justifying the Wii U's existence so far came mostly from Ubisoft, as shown with Rayman Legends and ZombiU.

The lack of an announced price tag or launch details didn't help, but ultimately it was the lack of software that screamed "8th Generation" that made the Wii U a failure at E3 2012. Oh, and as a reminder: we didn't know about Call of Duty coming to the Wii U or Bayonetta 2's existence at this point.

It's a pity too, because as E3 2013 showed, the Wii U was capable of making experiences that felt "next-gen," even when put alongside the PS4 and Xbone. X, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros 4 all wowed gamers a year later, even after the competition threw their hats into the ring.

I guess the words that best describe E3 2012 for Nintendo are "wasted oppurtunity." They had a chance to wow people with the coming of the next gen, and lacked the 1st party games to do so.

That said, how could Nintendo have avoided this problem?

The thing is, Nintendo was in a tough spot in terms of making software in mid-2012. The 3D Mario team, Mario Kart team, Zelda team and Smash Bros teams had all released their latest games within the past year. HAL Laboratories was presumably early in the development of their 3DS Kirby title. Retro wouldn't have Donkey Kong ready for release for over a year. Mario Party 9 had just come out. Intelligent Systems was busy with Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Pushmo/Crashmo. Camelot had just released their latest Mario Sports game for the 3DS. And Game Freak was still making their true next generation of Pokemon, instead leaving us with a late DS game.

In other words, Nintendo was screwed because they had stretched themselves too thin. In 2012, they released notable games for four major platforms, not including digital exclusives from smaller teams. Something, somewhere had to get the short end of the stick. The 3DS, with its rough beginning, happened to get the extra bit of resources in 2012 and 2013 to make it a hit, but this came at the expense of the early Wii U lineup.

Imagine for a moment if Nintendo had been willing to sacrifice the 3DS to the Wii U. Next Level Games could have made a 3rd Mario Strikers game to compensate for the lack of FIFA, Paper Mario: Sticker Star could have been an early 2013 Wii U game, Pikmin 3 would have come out earlier since NSMB2 would be absorbing less resources, Kid Icarus: Uprising could have been shifted to the new console, etc. Having more games early on could only have helped the system. But would they have been worth killing handheld gaming for?

Ultimately, E3 2012 was not proof that Nintendo had no idea what they were doing. Well, maybe it was, but it was also something else. It was a sign that Nintendo is having trouble supporting multiple platforms, probably due to its limited size. Remember, Nintendo EAD only has around 500 employee split among its half a dozen teams; Ubisoft Montreal alone has over 2600! If Nintendo wants to survive, it has to either has to either sacrifice one of its two spheres (consoles or handhelds), find some way to get more developers to make games for their systems, or gain more production capacity.

And it seems Nintendo has chosen the last two options mixed together. Even before E3 2012, they agreed to publish LEGO City exclusively for ther platforms. Since then, you can also add Ninja Gaiden 3, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Fatal Frame, and Hyrule Warriors to the list for the Wii U alone.

I'm having trouble concluding this feature; I could go on a tangent like this all day, and end up miles away from E3 2012. So here's the best thing to come from Nintendo's series of E3 2012 presentations.

^I still remember the "Non Specific Action Figure". I hope they add it to Smash Bros! Or make it the star of that S.T.E.A.M. game.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.
