I'm in the Sony camp, but PS4 having nothing but indies is true. Two retail games and indie, indie, indie. I'm not impressed. I'm not impressed with the Xbox One games either, but atleast the secured some exclusives. It's Microsoft though, so that's understandable. *folds a moneyhat.* The difference between Microsoft securing all those exclusive digital titles, even if they were all on PC, is they were the first console to actually embrace digital only titles. Sony on the PS3 had digital only games here and there, but it wasn't until the two years that they've been pushing for indies because it's become popular. Ever since Sony started pushing for indies, it's been indie this indie that, indie, indie, indie, indie, indie. As much of a Sony fan as I am, it's only one of the issues I have with them as a company. People says that Sony copies and that's party true. If something is really popular Sony takes the idea and goes with it, but when Sony does it, they push the idea like they were there first, like the idea hasn't ever been around, so they force it down our throats and us, their fans, honestly don't give two shits. The thing is. By the time Sony actually gets in to capitalize, no one really even cares anymore. Motion control was done and by the time Sony released the Move, everyone already owned a Wii and tried it out already, and very few people actually cared to purchase it. Sony releases the Vita and acts like they're first with a touch screen console gaming, so most of their first party games throw out forced touch screen controls to try and get us into the touch screen aspect. Now it's the indies that were already played out well before this year and the hype is dying down. |
I don't think PS4's launch line up is any different than XBOs, or all the console launches before them. Its simply "Good Enough" to give gamers SOMETHING to play when the consoles come out but with minimum risk. The way Sony capitalized on this is by having many indies bring their stuff on the console early.
That said, I do agree with some of your statements but I see it a tad differently.
Sony has this horrible tendency to be late to react to good ideas. Even when they originally come up with them. I imagine its their ridiculously long quality assurance proofing process before doing just about anything.
-Home was expounding upon Miis but was trying to do something new and inovative with it. Somehow they ended up leting MS beat them to the punch with something very similar to both.
-Move is definitely a rushed product no doubt. Its based on their Eyetoy tech. Most fail to realize tho, that Kinect's capabilities was a Sony vision for PS3 before it even came out. Look up "Eyedentify" if you need proof. The idea was scrapped for gaming because they learned early on that handsfree gaming is just......eeew. MS is just now realizing it and relagating the device mostly to advertising/voice activation/ and gesture based UI control.
-Demon's Souls. One of the most innovative RPGs in a long while, and it was exclusive to PS3. Sony totally slept on this one, even AFTER it gained ridiculous cult popularity. The end result is From Software making Dark Souls multiplatform.
-Internet capabilities were always planned for PS2, years before release. Yet Dreamcast and Xbox both claimed that fanbase by setting up shop within the online space first. Not to say that the PS2's online ability was that good in the first place. Still, weak follow thru on their part.
-And some stuff they just blatently plagerize. PSASBR comes to mind(still love the gameplay tho).
