I'm sorry but this isn't logical.  Sony HAD to charge for online because MS did?  why?

It was here before Sony too and would still be be here if they went bust.

You have no point other than a biased view.  Its that simple.

The biased view of beeing a microsoft customer for a decade.

I've been a Sony customer for over 30 years plus.  Irrelevant.

You have been a MS customer for 10 years... you still hate them.  Your posts here are vitriol based on nothing but hatred.  There is no substance to your rants, no logic to your "points"

Im not letting it drop.  Answer why Sony HAD to follow the lead on the practices you hate?  Surely by avoiding them they would have customers flocking.  Who wuld signup to money grabbing, evil practices if a better, free and more open solution existed?

Says the guy who ignored my direct question the other day. Funny guy.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

If Sony dominates, then Sony dominates. I don't see the forums changing all that much. Maybe there will be a couple more threads with the title "Sony is teh bestz!!!", but not a drastic change.

Also, Sony probably will win this generation. Dominate? Hmm... I don't know.

I think it depends on your definition of domination.  I think 50% market share would be domination, but someone else might demand 66%  or something

Good discussion, people. Read every post and liked how things turned out. I'm just going to comment on a few thoughts I had tonight (during a date, no less. What's wrong with me?).

When I mean dominate, I mean "DOMINATE". I mean that the Xbox One and Wii U can't compete at all because Sony owns such a large share of the market. In the past, the most popular console has never been the most powerful. The cheapest console has never been the most powerful. This looks to be a new beast entirely. There are virtually no weaknesses to be exploited on the PS3.

I think that if the Xbox One isn't a smashing success, Microsoft is gone from the console gaming business. Poof. No more Xbox. Though I never count Nintendo out, the Wii U is being widely ignored by third parties.

Look back at when the Nes was the dominant console. We had shoddy versions of games like Bad Dudes, Double Dragon, TMNT, etc. The console just wasn't powerful enough and Nintendo was okay with that. It took Sega to up the ante with the Genesis and make significant headway for Nintendo to get up off of their laurels and launch the SNES. Had it not been for Sega pushing Nintendo, would the SNES have been as good? Would we still have to look at Nintendo censorship and shady business practices? Sega was trying everything under the sun to steal Nintendo fans away. Full body motion control with the Activator, Menacer gun, Sega CD and 32-X, Six button controllers, Lock On Technology--you name it, Sega tried it. The competition brought out the best and worst in both companies and it was a golden age (in my opinion).

Look at when the Playstation emerged. Nintendo was more than happy to continue using cartridges that sometimes cost over $80 at retail. They still felt that Sony was no threat. When Sony showed they meant business, Nintendo had to adapt or fall behind. They fell behind.

When the PS1 and PS2 were dominant, things were great. There were tons of great games in every genre but it took Microsoft and the original Xbox to push Sony. Sony was satisfied offering paltry online and darn near defective hardware and no HDD. If Nintendo didn't push the Rumble Pak or the analog controller, it's likely Sony wouldn't have pushed it, either. The competition made Sony a better company and Sony made Nintendo and Microsft better companies.

When the Xbox 360 launched, it offered $50 a year online and M$ did everything they could to make sure that $50 was well spent. Sony came in and pushed Microsoft by pretty much matching everything Microsoft was doing and offering it for FREE. When Sony finally decided to charge $50, the tossed in tons of "free" games. The result was Microsoft offering free games.

Would Playstation Plus be what it is if Microsoft wasn't pushing Xbox Live so hard? Would Nintendo finally be an online presence if M$ and Sony weren't so popular amongst the online community? Would Microsoft have gone with Kinect (fuck you, I love it!) if the Wii weren't such a smash hit? Bottom line, the competition amongst the companies is what has driven innovation amongst the hardware developers. As great as the PS2 was, it was shit online compared to the Xbox. As great as the SNES was, it was shit when it came to "mature" games and sports games when compared to the Genesis. Your favorite companies were forged by great competitors.

We can have competition amongst developers on a single platform like those days of domination but I don't think it will yield the same results. I fucking LOVE my 3DS but I wish it weren't so far ahead of the Vita. I love my Vita and it has a lot of features that I wish the 3DS would have copied. The hardware is just better. Because the 3DS is in such a dominant position, there is absolutely no reason for Nintendo to do anything the Vita is doing.

That's what I fear will happen if the PS4 dominates. It will be a great hardware with lots of great games and lots of shared memories but who knows what we'll be missing?

If you just read the longest post ever, thank you.

This sforum and most gaming forums would get so boring if that happens.

Sony will dominate. Because the have the experiance of (cinematic) meovies and their future games will all be based on that. Uncharted and the last of us are both prove
of that.

Most people here are Sony fans in one way or another, so I would think not much would be different.

I just look at the forums. I know internet =/= reality but if you listen to some, Sony has every single advantage. I just don't think it would be good for anybody involved if we have such a one sided fight. What will be their motivation to innovate? Before the Xbox 360 and Wii came along, Sony was virtually a non-player on their own consoles. Aside from Gran Turismo, Crash and Spyro (which Universal took back), and the eventual God of War, what was Sony known for? Third party games that flocked from Nintendo to greener pastures.

Close competition is GOOD for the industry. People have been crying for Microsoft's demise for so long that they don't seem to appreciate the good things Sony has done in response to Microsoft. Before the Xbox 360, Sony released the weakest most fragile hardware on the market and they were satisfied with this. So many Sony features were tested on the market by Nintendo and Microsoft first. This is an ecosystem. Even the ones we despise serve a purpose, right?

The reason most people want MS gone is because of them paying of devs to keep games the same on both platforms even of their system lags behind and not to even mention their paying off of devs for 3rd party exclusives...

Yes competition is good, but not the brand of competition that Microsoft is offering. I think the only hope is MS backs out and another player comes in, and hopefully NOT Apple, because they'd probably be even worse.

the last time Sony consoles dominated, PS1 and PS2 we ended up with vast libraries of great games on a single system, despite buying all 3 I am all for that happening again.

It must be fairly frustrating for the hardcore Microsoft fan though, to be on top for much of this generation like the popular guy in highschool, then not only have the carpet swept from under your feet at the last second, but facing the prospect of spending the remainder of your college years in the shadow of the new mr popular, though the same was said for the PlayStation fan when mr popular ps2 got to college and his room mate Xbox 360 got all the girls - i suppose if were sticking with that theme in the end ps3 grew up and got rid of the acne, bottle-bottom glasses and became popular too.

You can call out xbox fans for their story changing avoidance tactic ways all you want though, just know and understand that if the tables were turned its the playstation fans that would be doing all of the defending, much like they did with the PS3 in the early days.

Only major difference here is that as a console brand, despite all of Microsofts piles of money, despite a matured and excellent network infrastructure, the PlayStation brand is just more widely liked around the world, evident from the PS3 playing catch up (but actually catching up) since the day it was launched, despite the higher press, less games and usually the crapper version of multiplats.

Launching with the opposite climate, the public favor, lower price point and virtually identical launch windows, the Xbox One doesnt stand a chance in the short or longterm, i just hope it does well enough sales wise to have a long and fruitful life as there are a fair number of promising and enjoyable IPs attached to them.

Anyone wishing their failure, are essentially wishing the demise of very good franchises, in which case you are wanting the destruction of games purely because those games arent on your chosen system, and you need to grow up.

Xbox fans that cling to the prospect that the xbox one has hidden power, or will match or even beat the ps4 this generation, also need to wake up and smell the coffee, it isnt bad to remain an xbox fan, not by a long shot, enjoy the console and enjoy the games, and playstation fans, we get it the PS4 is more powerful, and is most likely going to sweep this generation with ease, its obvious so shut up and play your games theres no need to kick others while theyre down, just be realistic about things or regardless of which side youre on, or which side comes out on top, you move from being a fan to being a fanboy.
