Forums - Microsoft - Including Kinect With Every Xbox One Is A Smart Move By Microsoft

Ive reread through the comments of this thread.

I just realized why people are saying what they are saying. A lot here are talking about Kinect as a controller. When 70% of its uses aren't even that.

Remember, Microsoft are on a completely different path than Sony. Completely different.

Its called Xbox One for a reason. Microsoft are trying to provide more than a games console. Something new and refreshing. Something that adds value to watching films, skyping made easy on a big screen, watching TV in an instant etc etc etc.

Sure you don't need it, the same way we don't need and didn't need Ipods ( CD's in cars for example were just fine ).

But its technology. And when it releases if it works beautifully then brilliant. Why not have a powerful games machine and the rest of the bells and whistles and have Windows 8 thrown in? They have done it, so either buy it and try it, or stick to just a games machine.

Personally Im looking forward to using PC's less. All I do on a PC anyway is internet and Word stuff. And I don't really have the room or want to have a PC or wires set up to my TV. Why when My Xbox One can do it easier?

i couldn't agree more.  microsoft are on the path to irrelavancy.  completely different.

Posts like is will be gold 12 months from now. Oh.... how we will all laugh at it together.

why wait 12 months?  i know my comment is silly.  so is selnor's persistent use of playtation 360.5.  we all know xbox can play games.  we all know playstation can do media.    ..but that's not going to stop me from poking fun at selnor's illusions of grandeur.

This is also how I see it. An all in one machine.

As far as Kinect being a controller; I also think it is a misconception a lot of people have. They see it as a controller and of course; as a bad one compared to the controller itself (the one with buttons :)). On top of all the live living room things (voice controls, etc..) I see Kinect as an additional way of playing or enhancing game play. One very good exemple is in BattleField 4 where you can lean your head to look around corners while moving and aiming with a real controller. (Who can seriously say that this is not awesome? I mean all of us while playing FPS does that, lean the head while approaching a corner )

And yet in the ps4 you just tilt the controller. While keeping your head focused normally on the tv. In my opinion is far better. Youd know this if you've used head tracking before, which the eye can do as well.

Even I, who considers Kinect one of the worst purchases of my life, believe that it's a smart move, and that it's actually Sony making a huge mistake by not shipping their 3D camera with every console.

Xbox One is more expensive and has much less power - but at least it's offering a new feature (well, "new" is probably the wrong word, considering that Kinect is already several years old and people quickly quickly lost interest).

PS4 on the other hand is, in a way, really hardly more than a graphically vastly improved PS3.

As pointless as the device is for games, it's still the Xbone's biggest  selling point and might actually turn out to be the most important factor in the Xbone vs. PS4 sales battle.

This is how I look at it, games will determine if the Kinect was a good thing or not, so far all these uses people mention just create more doubts to me, skype while gaming? I can skype on my phone, PC, I dont need a market place for movies, my on Demand works just fine, another thing, besides, call me old fashioned, but I just want to play games, I dont want to see or meet the people I'm playing with, I'm an adult I would feel weird if 10-12 year olds want to cam with me while playing, man, wtf happened to the days where I could just sit on my couch on my boxers and just game all night.

The safe, iterative nature of the PS4 may backfire strongly in the end.  There are some cool, forward thinking features, but they are being minimized while MS is putting those at the forefront of the X1.  PS4 feels very ... Gamecube (which I did own and enjoy very much, for the record).

Kinect is essentially this generations "Blu-ray" drive.

Sony was trying to use Blu-ray in PS3 to sort of work as a "Livingroom box" type situation, and they pretty much failed.

Kinect is the Backbone behind the Xbox one as the "All in one" living room system. Where you connect everything through it and it works great to manage all your home entertainment. Whether it's a smart move or not in my opinion depends on if it sells like a console (probably not) or sells to a lot of people for non console reasons

Not really, there are noe an extra (nearly) 80 million blu-rays in peoples home, this also helped the blu-ray vs HD-dvd war, and now other companies (micorsoft) are using the same tech, I don't see how that failed

outside of America i think its pretty much failed...as what deals for Tv do they have in the EU? in all those different countries?

80 extra million Blu-ray players nobody uses.  Have you actually seen any recent blu-ray media vs DVD numbers... they aren't pretty... and they're shinking.

As for Blu-ray vs HD-DVD.   That was never a real fight, Blu-ray never had a chance to lose.   HD-DVD at best had halfhearted studio support, while Blu-ray was OWNED by one of the largest movie studios.

I'm not sure what your second sentence means.

I think people need to realize that kinect is xbox one. Its absolutely fine in you not liking that. I don't particularly find much value in ps4's direction. But i don't cry out about it. I like the ps3 games i have and enjoyed it as a games machine. But i do everything else from watching films to using apps on 360. Its easier faster and has more. At least in my country.

i like the idea of not having to scroll through menus on xbox one, i like the instant tv switching and its multitasking capabilities. I like that i can play windows 8 metro games and use windows 8 apps. I like the package offered. I use xbox music and xbox video already. They are really well put together and extremely well priced in comparison to Spotify etc. I have everything in one place. Including my gaming.

it will take Sony to give me all of this for ps4 for me to consider changing. The fact that i get alot of great exclusives at launch is a bonus i don't think anyone was expecting at least from Microsoft.

the camera is half of kinect. If they take the camera out, in paying for chips in the console that are wasted. Same with ps4 controller. So hey, kinect makes things outside controlling games faster and easier than traversing menus. That's a bonus in itself. A welcome bonus. Yeah its 20 quid more than the ps4. ( i get a free game i was buying anyway) but i was buying xbox one for more reason than games in the first place.

at the end of the day, kinects camera wont be removed. Either don't buy xbox one or do. That's why the world has choices in it.

be happy with your choices, i am.

Yep. Theres consoles out there with no camera included.

Its last gen or 1 from this gen

360, PS3 and PS4.

Vita comes bundled, DS etc etc.

Its the modern era, not the 1990's.

Guarantee there will be a kinectless SKU within 2 years, id take a bet on that, they released consoles without hard drives last gen and that was much more crippling to the systems.

Of those games listed they use it in gimicky ways, ones not even confirmed, another had added controller support after originally being kinect only.

As i said in another thread, to 3rd parties less than 50% of there audience will have kinect, theyll soon see there is more merit in adding impoving features for all there users not just gimmick features for a minority of there players.

And that 50% is being very generous.

I also dont expect 3rd parties to adopt PS4 touch pad or camera or the wii U Pad in meaningfull ways either on multiplatform games in the long term.

I do expect some early launch titles to use these features while the tech guys and designers are initially having fun playing with them, that will soon wear off.

It's not really the same.  The Xbox 360 was designed to work without a hard drive - they were still relatively pricey back then.  And ALL games (until the last year when it was loosened with Halo4 and GTAV) were required to be able to run on the DVD alone.

Every command is designed to work with voice on the Xbox One.  And this is a good improvement.  As I can do 99% of browsing and app with my voice, but the rare thing that pops up where I need a controller is annoying.  As I am often doing things, working, moving around and don’t have my hands free.

With all due respect, since you seem to dismiss Kinect so much, I have to ask, then why are you always in the threads? Why not just laugh with you see one and think "ha ha, those XBoners are going to be so miserable. tee hee"

I know you think it will flop.  So let it flop if that is what is going to happen.  You can not make it flop by posting, 'It's useless and will flop.' The postings makes it looks like the fear is if it does succeed, it will succeed big.

Also, if you would like to come over and play with my Xbox 360 and Kinect I would be happy to show you some fun things.  I think there is much you don’t even realize it can do.

Oh, and here is some Ice Cream for you; I hope you like green tea:

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

It's a smart move in that it helps differentiate the Xbox from the PS4. Basically I think that all 3 manufacturers are taking a different approach to their next gen console.

Nintendo went for a unique input method/accessory and a cheap price, thus sacrificing power.
Sony is going for high power and a relatively cheap price leaving the accessory(camera) out of the box.
Microsoft want the unique accessory(kinect) and the power in the end sacrificing the price.

We know that Nintendo has been struggling with their console, but which of the other 2 approaches is going to work best (or if they'll both be equally successful) remains to be seen.

PS.: I really think that a certain person in this thread is seriously overselling the features and uses of the kinect that have been shown till now, neither skyping while gaming nor any of the ingame uses of the kinect the article mentions can in my opinion be described as revolutionary, let alone make the Xbox One the only true next gen system.
