I'm sure it requires no reminding, but two of the biggest games in...forever come out within one month of each other. One is already out and setting all kinds of records, and the other is weeks away.

But my question is, which will sell better in the long term? Will it be Pokemon, or Grand Theft Auto? GTA IV is sat at just under 20mil combined right now, and Diamond/Pearl (which I will use for comparison) is sat at around 18mil. However, both GTA V and X/Y are far bigger than their previous entries, and as such should outsell them in the long run. Also worth remembering is that new consoles launch in a couple of months, which will clip the wings of GTA and stop it selling what it would otherwise.

Personally, I'd give this one to GTA were the new systems not coming out, but because they are...it's Pokemon for me. But not by much.

Ofcourse, you're welcome to disagree, but I'd like to hear your take on this. Just a reminder- I'm not including re-releases (so no GTA on PC, PS4 etc, or Pokemon X/Y 2). 

I don't know much about X/Y but why do you think that it's going to perform better than Diamond/Pearl and Black/White ?

Currently I would say that each the 360 and the PS3 version of GTA V will outsell X/Y combined.

Are you SERIOUSLY asking this question? Pokemon will have a hard time ever reaching GTA V first week sales in its lifetime.

It should easily outsell Black and White, because it's not the second game in the generation. And because of the extra hype surrounding X/Y, it should be fine outselling Diamond/Pearl as well. 

Maybe I was unclear on that one. Also, I expect the PS3 version of GTA V to sell around 15mil LT, so around 37mil LT for them combined.

GTA 5 will sell 30 million life time. Around 35 million if next gen and PC version comes.

Why not? Look at the sales of the other games and how they're staggered and you'll see what I mean. The games normally go on to sell 3x as much as their first week, and it's had the largest ever first week. That and the fact people may buy it for their new systems anyway at Christmas and you've got at least 22mil by the end of the year. 

Perhaps I'm being a tad optimistic, I agree. But I do think this game will reestablish the size and scope of Rockstar. And rightly so.

Nah, Grand Theft Auto will win. Even if I hope it won't.

Pokémon X/Y will still put up a decent fight though, and I think it'll outsell Call of Duty Ghosts as well. X/Y has the potential of getting comfortably over 20m. I agree that GTAV won't get to something like 30m+ (it just won't have the legs like GTAIV), but it should still end up at something like 25m.

Not what I want, but what will happen. GTA V. Already 17,5 million, Pokemon will not reach this 1st goal...

GTA will sell more in 2013 than X/Y sells lifetime.
