Forums - Sales - Multiplatform vs Exclusive, what will sell more?

the PS3 and 360 are practically considered one system by developers these days, if it's coming to one there is a 90% chance it's coming to the other. Which means it just comes down to quality. A bad or mediocre exclusive won't sell as well as a good multiplat.

In general the average multiplatform game will sell better than an exclusive game. Just because all Mario games have been exclusives, and have all sold very well, but that was not because they were exclusive, same with GT, it was because they are very good

The theory is, that they wouldn't have reached that quality, if they was released as multiplat. For multiplat is more work to do and the developers have to make compromises to make the gameplay similar on different platforms.

I don't know... with the best racing game on that console being ExcitTruck... or "Cars". ;)

I don't think they'd dislike GT that much.

Eh, here's one Wii owner with zero interest in a Wii port of GT5.  GT5 is one of the few games that makes really good use of the PS3's capabilities such that the experience would be severely hampered on the Wii.

That being said, Excite Truck is a lot of fun, and it isn't trying to be a realistic racing game.  Nor is it the best racing game for the Wii.

Multiplatform

If it's a good game, it will always sell more on multiple systems, than on one, in my mind. If it's a crappy game, or very, very niche, than it will sell slightly more, but it'll be a negligible amount.

Say Brawl had come out in Japan last week on the wii and ps2. Do you think that it would have somehow sold less than the ~800K that it sold? I sure don't. I wouldn't be surprised if it sold more than double that.

Depends on the system.

Usually exclusives. It's been different with the PS3 for some reason. My guess is because almost no one owns the system. So exclusives end up having a lot less hype then multiplatform games.

If most of your friends have 360s, you are just going to be more hyped over COD4 then Uncharted.

Or are you just talking about combined period... cause that's a harder thing to figure out.

and I shall repeat myself again, this is a COMPLETELY different age!

Wait so you knew his position was missrepresented by your OP and posted it anyways?  Thats pretty sleezy.  If you wanted to highlight the discussion you could at least repeat his position accurately, but restating it to suit your purposes is just low.

There is a huge difference between saying Exclusives sell better than X-Plats and saying that Exclusive make up the majority of the top-sellers lists.  For starters one of those statements is an easily checked and easily proven fact.  But really they are vastly different statements.

Either you were ignorant to the difference or you were just posting it that way to gain the upper hand and didn't care how dishonest it was.

To Each Man, Responsibility

It's more complex that simply yes/no.

At the moment, the sales trend seems to be:

360/PS3 multiplat > Wii exclusive > 360 exclusive > PS3 exclusive

The only way I can see this changing is Wii exclusives getting ahead of HD multiplats, and PS3 exclusives gaining an edge over 360 exclusives. Neither looks very likely at the moment, but things might change.

Of course some truly spectacular games like Halo 3 or Brawl will defy this, but that's why I said trend. Developers will also probably look at how the HD consoles are easier to do multiplats with, and how Wii exclusives are much faster to produce, as well as needing significantly smaller sales to make a profit.

I think it depends. For example, a AAA exclusive could easily outsell a multiplatform game that sucks, and a AAA multiplatform game could easliy outsell an exclusive that sucks. It just depends on which games you compare. (and yes, these are only 2 cases, there are many more possibilities, but I only used these for simplicities sake and because there is a ton of speculation involved in this.).

Normally a game that is an exclusive will sell better than if it would have been multiplatform, IF it is not a well known IP. IThat's usually the given rule. But well known IPs, the more platforms you put it on, then obviously the more sales you'll get.

It wasn't misrepresented in any way, he knew my stand and he stood by his view, while I stood by mine. It wasn't like tricked him into anything.

Hence him and I have such polar view, I just thought it's something we can all express our opinions on
