Forums - Nintendo - 'Over 1000' indie devs have shown interest in Wii U

CVG

Over 1000 indie developers and studios have shown an interest in developing for Wii U, according to Dan Adelman, Nintendo's manager of business development.

During Game Developers Conference in March this year, Nintendo launched a new Wii U developer website where indies could register their interest in making games for Wii U.

In a new interview with Gamespot, Adelman said the response from developers has been "overwhelming".

"We've gotten probably over 1,000, I don't know if we've hit 2,000, developers with really wide-ranging levels of experience.

"We've got some who have recently left their jobs in mainstream publishers and are starting a new company, or have been indies for a while. All the way to high school students who are thinking of getting into game development and want to know more about it.

"So one of the challenges is going through and it's ultimately a resource allocation issue at that point. We want to support everybody, so how do we do that in the most effective manner and how do we prioritize in just making sure that... our intent is to support everyone, really.

"The underlying philosophy is that if you can make a game on our systems, we want to find a way for you to be able to do that."

In August, Adelman confirmed that 20-30 more indie games would be coming to Wii U by the end of 2013.

Sweet. Build up that indie base so when 2% of them become larger companies due to smash hits, they will love Nintendo.

If 20 of all those 1000 or 2000 actually make a good game or two that would be nice.

Need something off Play-Asia? http://www.play-asia.com/

It takes like two seconds to fill out the form.

No reason not to submit one, but also very few of those thousand will actually make it to the system.

This is the kind of stat that Sony, then MS and now Nintendo keep throwing around. Utterly meaningless isn't it really.

Nintendo has been very close with indies ever since the beginning of the Wii U's life.

OT: numbers don't mean anything when we don't know the quality of those games. I'll be surprised if 10 of those 1000 games are actually worth playing.

I agree. It's cool that Nintendo makes it easier for indies to develop to the system and this website is a step in this effort. But the number of registrations at this point is meaningless.
