I usually pretend the handhelds versions don't exists. That's what I do for Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Uncharted, Kingdom Hearts, Zelda, Metroid, etc.

In the case of the bolded series, a few of the handheld games are better than majority of the console games.  Uncharted is just as good and supposedly the God of War games and Metal Gear Solid titles are as well if you happen to be a fan of the series.

It was explain in 3 minutes with a cool song at the beginning xD

Of course it felt like I missed some part of the storyline, but KH2 story didn't d it, everything in KH2 storyline was explained in KH2, it's only the impact of KH2 storyline on the whole universe that needed the understanding of COM. (<- Weird and too long phrasing)

That really doesn't provide enough context, though. I'm sure if I was more familiar with the story it would imply more, but a lot of the images are disconnnected and don't make a lot of sense on their own. Kind of like the beginning of the first game, which I didn't understand too well either.

As far as the story of KH2 goes, I refer to the previous questions I thought needed answering. Who are Roxas and Axel and why do they matter? What is Organization XIII and what happened to its other members? What was with the letter?

Actually, except for the letter (wich is not important), Sora can't answer these questions himself. And you play from his perspective.

You don't need an answer to everything, nomura always leave questions for example. I think that's a part of the experience.

Two people living different experiences by playing or not playing a game in the serie, it's something. And i think both these experiences are as valuables.

If we played from Sora's perspective, then the game wouldn't keep showing cutscenes involving other characters.  Kingdom Hearts has a far-from-limited POV.

Some questions can be left open. But never at the expense of the plot. It's been a while, but I don't seem to remember them ever explaining how they end up in the pods at the beginning of KH2. Basic questions about who characters are and why they do what they do are never answered. I can turn my brain off and just have fun playing the game, but a story shouldn't seek that outcome.

I think the problem here is that you are considering spinoffs. They are not, they are canonically parts of the overall saga, just because they dont have a number doesnt make it less so. Hell BBS is pretty much KH0. MGS Peace Walker is not a spinoff, its part of the story not to mention it has the same gameplay. Rising? Spinoff, alternate future and it has different gameplay

Hency why I put "spinoffs" in quotes. Because if they were actually spinoffs, I wouldn't have a problem since I wouldn't need to play them to understand.

However, since they're part of the main series in all but name, I pretty much have to play them to understand what's going on, and the way it's strucutred makes that infuriatingly difficult. It's like if Halo 1 and Halo 4 were on Xbox 360, while Halo 2 was on PS3, Halo 3 was on PSP, and Halo: Reach was on Wii.

ah, it is what it is. u can either just deal and buy the systems and games; or borrow. read watch youtube or just stay confused. it sucks but those are your options

i think SE does this cause portable games are cheaper to make

I realize that. The point I was illustrating is that a well-written story would still establish important details when they became relevant, and not leaving questions unanswered.. If the events of a previous game are central to the plot of another, they should recap them. It would have taken all of 30 seconds, and it would have made things a lot clearer.

If all you have is a ps2 you can play re chain of memories between 1 and 2
So there is. Much less confusion there.
I do agree its crazy how often they jump platforms though

...handheld Zelda...Metroid?

Could someone reassure me on this.
I've neve played a KH game but I'm about to when I buy KH1.5HD, will I understand the story after finishing both games and watching the cutscene?
I'm playing it because I live JRPGs and I want to see what it's all about plus I know KH3 is coming to ps4 so Ill be picking that up.
