Not quite true. When MS and Sony are direct competitors in a 3 horse race as in the video game console business then there's plenty of snark and sniping going on between the companies. Guaranteed Sony wants to squish MS in the console business and vice-a-versa. But both companies compartmentalise and they don't let their console antagonism spill over into areas of business where they have mutually beneficial partnerships, as in the PC area. But I think there's been a bit of an attitude in the console hardware business that if you're not winning you're losing. So the players have basically tried to take each other out. "Sega does what Ninten don't" anyone? But this generation just ending suggests that perhaps being 2nd or 3rd doesn't matter so much as long as market share is relatively even. It'll be interesting to see if market share does stay relatively even in the coming generation, but even more interesting will be to see if the generation just ending was the peak generatio for total console sales or if we'll see further expansion. I still think we're headed for an over all contraction of the console market, which might keep the competitive strategies pretty hot blooded.
Sony have much more to worry about among other android handset makers than they have to worry about MS/Nokia in that market. In effect Sony and Kaz can ignore Win phone because its pretty irrelevant competition-wise, so Kaz can afford to be charitable. Note how somewhat frosty and perhaps even a little defensive Kaz got when Samsung came up? We're different companies, we do video game consoles, entertainment, financial services. Sony has 2, maybe 3, targets to taking away market share in smartphones: Apple, Samsung and whoever's number 3 at the moment (HTC?). Kaz wasn't mean by any stretch but equally he didn't give Samsung any dues either, unlike how he opened with his MS comments.
@ Ssenkahdavic No it would not be like Sony saying they have a great relationship with Nintendo. Sony and Nintendo don't collaborate on anything. Sony (and MS) competes directly in all of Nintendo's core business. Xbox is not MS's core business and PS is not Sony's core business. But PC is MS's core business, and Sony is a close hardware partner there with MS and they have a mutual enemy: Apple. They can't afford to get pissy at each other merely because they are fierce competitors in what is a relatively minor part of their business.
