Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Bethesda/Gearbox point out why they don't support Wii U

That's not the real reason why they don't support the Wii U.

I spell out the REAL reason all this thread right here:

UNITY - Nintendo & Wii U Finish The Revolution

It's politics.
The 3rd parties from both the old-PC world & the console world are in a standoff against Nintendo for control of the videogaming business.
But little do they know that they will not be able to win this standoff.

Nintendo will UNIFY the gaming world in this generation despite their best efforts.
Wii was Part 1 of The Revolution.
Wii U is Part 2.

And believe me, when this is all said & done, Nintendo's impact on the industry will make last generation's one look tame by comparison.

Where is the story here? If video game players want to play Bethesda and Gearbox games they will do so on PC or on Microsoft and Sony systems -- like they've been doing for the past two generations.

The criticisms leveled at Nintendo in the OP haven't changed in the last 17 years and they won't change anytime soon. Nintendo makes unique hardware to fit its homegrown software. That's how it works. It frustrates third-parties, but it makes incredible first-party experiences on Nintendo consoles and handhelds. As far as online goes? Nintendo is more invested in local multiplayer and co-op.

This boils down to philosophy. And, again, it's nothing new. Nintendo offers a very specific range of products in the market. Not everyone likes them, and not everyone is willing to develop for them.

So, to me, this is a non-story.

To the Nintendo-heads who don't believe its really Nintendo that are holding themselves back from third parties, this is what I have been saying all along. Nintendo creates their consoles without truthfully consulting third parties to see what they think. These aren't the days when third parties were under their control and didnt have a liberating entity to give them different hardware architecture whilst commanding the mass marketshare.

Nintendo is Dad. The 3rd Party are The Kids.
Dad pays the bills. He doesn't HAVE to consult The Kids on what to do with the house.
The 3rd parties have been spoiled by Sony & Microsoft over the years.
It's because Sony & Microsoft are not really gamemakers & depend on 3rd party developers to supply content for their systems.

But that's not the way it used to be done.
The 1st Party matters most because they take the risk in developing the platform as well as the games that will play on it.
That's how it used to be.
That's how it will be again once Nintendo finally UNIFIES this industry & ends this standoff that has been going on for the past 20 years.

You don't get the level of innovation that Nintendo produces by asking the 3rd parties if it's OK to do something.
We would probably never have the Control Pad (D-Pad) if Nintendo asked contemporary developers how the control should be.
They would probably say "like the Atari Joystick!"

It's time for the 3rd parties to learn their place.
This is gonna be the last generation we see this kind of foolishness from them.
John Lucas

P.S.: Remember, your 3rd parties promoted that BS you saw Microsoft trot out here at E3 2013 with the XBox One.
They need to be reined in.

Very interesting episode. I'd recommend you watch at least the first half which deals with what Nintendo could do to gain 3rd party support, and  two 3rd parties are talking about their experience directly. Some of the main points seems to be (I'm paraphrasing):

-Nintendo made their box without really consulting 3rd parties, whereas Sony and MS have done so from a very early point of the PS4/One development.

-Wii U not in parity with the PS4/One. Requires additional resources because of architecture and the need to cut stuff out of a game to fit the Wii U hardware.

-Audience is different from what Bathesda/Gearbox makes, which makes them reluctant to spend additional resources.

-Nintendo's online is subpar when next gen seems to be focusing more and more on the co-op/competitive experience.

I tried to summarise as best I could, but to hear it exactly from the horse's mouth, watch the episode.

The bold underlined is totally false. They consulted EA hence why we saw the unprecident support and this is a powerful machine speech.

EA lead them down a wrong path me things lol.

They consulted with EA on certain things, but hardware design doesn't seem to be any part of it. The Wii U hardware is designed by Nintendo with a huge emphasis placed on low electricty consumption, and that's spelled out in the Iwata Asks for the Wii U.

EA had virtually zero input on the actual console box I would say. Nintendo maybe listened to third parties on little things like adding clickable analog sticks for Call of Duty.

Like Activision and Ubisoft just found out, correct? In terms of next gen expectations, they are not incorrect. In terms of current gen they are assholes to not think the Wii U is more than capable. Nintendo did not consult devs about the next generation of gaming. They only sought to come after the current gen and try to act like they were the biggest guy on campus, then Sony and MS took the rug out from under them from the february to may period.

Sorry....but what are you talking about? "try to act like the biggest guy on campus"............what?

Also, Ubisoft had the highest selling third party Wii title to date (half a million copies), followed by Lego City and Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate. Ubisoft and Activision both are supporting Wii U with several titles this fall/holiday season, so they both obviously have faith that Nintendo will boost system sales (with the price drop and Zelda bundle, as well as Mario, DK and Wii Fit, they will), and obviously think it's worth it to support the console. Though to be honest, if they had kept Rayman as an exclusive and released it in Feb., it would have undoubtedly sold better than what it's going to wind up selling on any console this fall, with such stiff competition.

Also, I know my Nintendo history just fine. But their relationship towards third party studios in the Iwata era is much improved over the Yamauchi era. Vastly improved. The Wii U started off with very strong third party support. A lot of those games didn't light up the charts because they were quickly made ports, but the point is third parties felt Wii U was worth putting their games on. And as far as Bethesda and Gearbox are concerned, with the exception of the now-cancelled abortion of an Aliens game, what have either company ever put out on Nintendo systems to begin with? It's not exactly as if they have a history of support in either case.

Haha, I love that johnlucas is back.

Anyway, I was never expecting to see Elder Scrolls and/or Fallout on a Nintendo system, though maybe it´d have been kinda cool to use the Gamepad as your own Pip-Boy.

they arent saying anything that other devs and publishers have said for years. Hell anyone with a shred of common sense knows this, but yet you'll still get people who will ignore what they said and call them evil anyway. Hell its already started. This isnt about if this dev sucks or that dev sucks. Doesnt make what they are saying any less wrong

Yeah, you see the standard ad hominem attacks pile up pretty fast.  It's a LOT easier to say "Gearbox sucks" or "Bethesda sucks" than it is to speak to their argument.  We've seen the same thing recently with small developers who spoke up about Microsoft's indie policies, and before that with anyone who said the Cell processor was hard to work with.  Responses like that are usually meaningless and worthless.

Very good Bonus Round, I thought.  The DLC portion was also interesting.

-Nintendo made their box without really consulting 3rd parties, whereas Sony and MS have done so from a very early point of the PS4/One development.

This point is bs because why would Nintendo give a shit what Gearbox or Bethesda think about their system specs if they barely or never supported their systems in the past.

I know right? Why would Nintendo give a shit about any third parties? After all, most of them barely or never supported their systems in the past. ¬_¬
