Where is the story here? If video game players want to play Bethesda and Gearbox games they will do so on PC or on Microsoft and Sony systems -- like they've been doing for the past two generations.

The criticisms leveled at Nintendo in the OP haven't changed in the last 17 years and they won't change anytime soon. Nintendo makes unique hardware to fit its homegrown software. That's how it works. It frustrates third-parties, but it makes incredible first-party experiences on Nintendo consoles and handhelds. As far as online goes? Nintendo is more invested in local multiplayer and co-op.

This boils down to philosophy. And, again, it's nothing new. Nintendo offers a very specific range of products in the market. Not everyone likes them, and not everyone is willing to develop for them.

So, to me, this is a non-story.
