I have an 80gb Ps3 phat. Still works. It has its occasional problems like disc reading but overall it has worked well :)
Hope your friend's holds out well

80 GB Fat upgraded to 500 GB and it runs pretty much perfect and is imo much better construction wise than the super slim which I also have, if I had to choose between all the PS3 models the Fat is the one for me.
Still have my backwards compatible 60gb (upgraded since) fat ps3. Runs just as good as the first day I bought it

I still have my 40GB Spider Man 3 bundle from Feb 2008 and it's still going strong.I also have a friend who still has his 60GB from Dec.2006 and his is still going strong.
I also still have my Sixaxis controller but haven't used it in years.
I got a fattie, 2009 80 gb to be precise. I should really think about replacing the thermal paste and cleaning the inside one of these days. Mine gets hot pretty easily now and it doesn't help that the room I game in is usually hot.
Me. Bought in early 2009.
Hell, even my PS2 fat from mid-2003 is still running as if it's new - as is my PS1 fat.
I have a 40gb fat. Had it for around 5 years before it got the ylod. Got it repaired and now its a happy chappy. Havent had any other issues other than the red screen (of death). Fortunately this sorted itself once I turned off the console.

Yeah on my 80 GB model the fans get really loud and I'm always worried that it's overheating. Then I place my hand on the back to feel how hot it is and to my surprise it's always cool. The fans do a good job but damn they are loud lol |
Sounds like a classic case of thermal paste going dry. Fans usually are forced to run louder when the thermal paste starts drying up (at least this is the main case with PCs). I am not a PC expert but this is usually the problem when it comes to fans running fast/loud (I've seen it a few times and had fans sound like an aircraft taking off and they run a lot more silent after slapping down a fresh coat of thermal paste).
