Yeah on my 80 GB model the fans get really loud and I'm always worried that it's overheating. Then I place my hand on the back to feel how hot it is and to my surprise it's always cool. The fans do a good job but damn they are loud lol

Sounds like a classic case of thermal paste going dry. Fans usually are forced to run louder when the thermal paste starts drying up (at least this is the main case with PCs). I am not a PC expert but this is usually the problem when it comes to fans running fast/loud (I've seen it a few times and had fans sound like an aircraft taking off and they run a lot more silent after slapping down a fresh coat of thermal paste).
