Forums - Microsoft - Why MS is keeping Kinect and didn't sell it for $350 - $400

Back on subject.... I don't see how a 100 bucks makes that big of difference.... I have spent more than that on drinks over a weekend back in my college years.... and people have no problem paying 600 on a phone they'll have no use for compared to a cheaper one.... and that will last only 2-3 years....
To me an xb1 will cost me 57 bucks over 7 years.... I don't have many tech device that match that... yeah the ps4 is cheaper... but I don't see a 100 bucks being a big deal for anybody handling their finance properly...

As a potential PS4 owner, I am proud of MS for doing that. Hopefully they won't backpedal and release a Kinectless console.

Why do people act like the Kinect is the first of its kind to grace the gaming industry?

It's not the first of it's kind.  It's more capable than anything that has come before, as far as hands free goes, and it's packed with every console.  That's the difference maker.

Well we will have toi disagree, early reports are it still has issues, and I think it will still be relegated to mainly gimmicky add-onsand voice control. Full motion gaming is Not going to work.

That's fine.  I'm sure it will have issues--just not as much as Eyetoy, PS Eye, Live Vision, or Kinect 1.0.  I'm not getting a next gen console this year, anyway.  I'm happy with my PS3/360/Wii U (got it last year).  I just see what the potential appeal could be.  I'll wait until the software and reviews come but I'm fairly optimistic.  Microsoft is betting the farm on it so they must know something.

Yes because MS always makes sound decisions look at vista, Zune Windows 8, x1 policies, surface............oh snap. MS are not god nor infallable.

Hey, Zune was friggin awesome!  I don't know why it didn't take off.  I don't think I ever bothered with the other stuff.  I think the products were good but just couldn't find success.  Maybe the same will happen to the Xbox One/Kinect 2.0.  Quality product that nobody wants (ala Vita).

Many of those products were not good, Vista was trash,  as is win 8, as was ME, surface is OK but lacks compared to the competition. Zune was OK, but hardly a reason to leave your ipod. Thats the way kinect is, it's there, it sounds good in theroy, but it doesn't work that well, and is hardly a reason to get an xbox one.

vista was shit for one reason and one reason only.... constructor making shitty computers that couldn't handle it.... but on the right hardware it was working like a charm and was better than XP....
win 8 is way better than win 7 hands down no matter how hard people want to trash the GUI... win 8 performs way better than 7....  yeah booting to desktop with 8.1 will be great for some... but the start button... come on that piece of shit was bad already on win 7 (people actually hated it at the begining ).... anybody that knows how to use efficiently a computer shouldn't even need the start button... but be happy it's comming back for the noobs....
Zune steam rolls iPod.... heck I don't sony  as an hardware manufacturer and even them do better MP3 player than the iPod in terms of playback quality.... at the price tag of an iPod the quality of the product main function (playing music) is really not that great....

the only people that fail most of the time are the customers.... sucks for the companies and sucks for the one that actually use actual hard facts and not perceived opinion and taste.... too bad that category is the minority when it comes to mass market.... it's like for games... a lot of us wish CoD would die or at least not be the center of interest.... yet it is and those mean some great game ideas or probably canned or if they are released are either poorly execute for lack of focus or are completely ignored due to the overwhelming shadow the bigger titles are casting on them....

so yeah vista was a mistake, zune was a mistake and maybe win 8 will be.... but most of it is not due to the reason the customer mostly perceive....

Ah no, 8 is garbage. Blaming the consumer for your failed products is moronic and laughable at best. it IS the consumer who decides what is good and what isn't. it is this type of thinking that made MS reveal the x1 with all those policies no one wanted.

Vitsa was bad because MS made the OS way over bloated, and glitchy. MAny high powered PC's still had issues with Vista, they are well documented.

Zune is a failure period, no way to spin it.

A good product is one the consumner wants PERIOD, you cannot enforce on consumers what they want and do not want.

true... still doesn't make them right though... which is my point....
I can name you a bunch of products that are high valued in the consumer eyes and are not of good quality....
beats by dre is pure shit for anybody that cares about sound.... bose speaker are pure shit at that price for anybody that knows about speakers.... you can go on with many things... macdonald's is in no shape or form the best burger maker just by the quality of their product not even taking taste into concideration yet they are number one.... and you can go on.... consumer fail most of the time to see the true value of something.... but they decide what is good and stay.... you are right on that....

and win 8 on all accounts still blows win 7 as an OS that is well documented too GUI consideration asside I have both running and barely ever boot up win 7... well actually it is planned for removal... win 8 is more stable, faster and has nice little new things win7 doesn't have out of the box.... I never used the start button or barely ever used it before and booting to desktop is not a big deal... since I barely ever shut down my PC so it's where I want most of the time... and if I do I cold boot up in less than 15 seconds so clicking on the desktop icon still puts me ahead of a win7 user... but whatever....

I never backpedaled on anything. I stated the Move is revolutionary, not the Vita. On a concrete gaming level the Move/ Eye combo is has exponential gaming development potential oppose to the Kinect which is stuck in minigame land (even with Kinect 2.0...just watch Sony was right). Sony even stated this is why they had issues with the first PS Eye even though they saw the products potential making its debut back in 2004. They knew its draw backs.

Move Dev Diary 1 (Its a short six part series talking about the depth of the potential)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_98O99_R1c

Unlike the Vita the Move has actually sold quite a few units (over 10 million I believe). Sony profited off of the device, but they never created a killer app for it. The Vita and the Move don't sell amazingly because they don't have Killer apps to represent the peripheral themselves and encourage third party support and longevity. Instead of tearing down a great product that "no one gives a crap" about, figure out why they don't.

Sonys problem outside of the main console hardware has never been tech development, but rather content for the devices that are not the main console itself.

Not saying you did backpedal. I am saying if I linked the thread, you would. That is common knowledge though so who cares. You can say that stuff about potential about virtually anything on the market. Until there is proof we can see and play, it's BS. There is nothing mindblowing on the Move. It is, as you said about Kinect, a collection of minigames, with the occasional thrown in support in traditional games. Just like Kinect.

It's cute the way you always make it seem with the Move that Sony could just whip up a killer app to revolutionize gaming and sell the thing like hotcakes but meh... they just don't feel like it. I mean hey lets just rely on 3rd party companies to take advantage of this "revolutionary" add-on we released for the console and spent a lot of R&D money on. Makes a lot of sense.

I know why no one gives a crap about the Vita. It's an expensive handheld that plays watered down console ports and has laughably overpriced memory cards. I saw a guy spend $55 on a 16GB card yesterday. Yikes. And I know why no one gives a crap about the Move. It is a reactionary product too expensive and too much like the Wii, which people were already growing tired of.

Your bias is as blinding as the sun. Did you even watch the videos? The R&D video series shows you the 3D and environmental control of the Move/PSEye Combo. The video shows you the pinpoint accuracy of the camera coupled with the move. They don't need to waste their money making the most powerful camera on earth because they made the sensor tracking in it perfect at 1:1 with a controller that allows you to move within the world. Lets see people play Halo 4 with the Kinect. Its not even on par with the Move/PSEye combo in terms of actual capabilities.

The Move was in R&D years before the Wii U launched. They immediately started working on it the second the the first Eyetoy launched in 2004, you will see it if you research the move.

As for the Vita, as much as I love the tech...it draw backs are marketing, the price of its memory stick (which was dropped at Gamescom) and hot IP's and proper third party support due to a low installed base. Sony needs to create a cast of characters, get children acquainted with them in pop culture (like Mario and the Nintendo characters) and use them as a selling point for their portable. Give people games they cannot find elsewhere. This was the charm of the original Gameboy and continues to be the charm of Nintendos handhelds, which still are their bread and butter. I cannot defend Sony on their handheld and I wont. If they do somethng wrong, they were just wrong and they know it too. Using indy titles wont save them. Just because they have powerful hardware, doesn't mean they cannot make quality exclusive content for it. They are overworking themselves past their resources so they need third party intervention.

Pretty much in agreement with you.  I'm not rich or anything but I went out with some random hot girl a week ago.  Spent $80 on dinner alone (the whole night was $300)!  I know $500 isn't anything to sneeze at but it's not much more than the competition.  People can't just wait a week or two and have an extra $100 for something they want?

The Xbox was created to be as similar to the Playstation as possible in order to compete for the newly created market Sony created. Technically where it matters the consoles are at parity (hence why Japan does not really care for the Xbox), it just depends on your cup of tea in games. If you like multiplatform games and can afford to shell out money for the consoles its really an incremental battle that comes down to price, graphics and games.

What bias is that exactly? The bias for reality? I will gladly claim a bias towards reality and what we can actually see and touch and play versus magical potential wonderland. And like the rest of the gaming world, IDGAF about the Vita so idk what you're going on about in the last paragraph but I am skipping it ;)
