Why is 1080 so much more important to you then 720, they both have a clean,clear HD quality picture and are gonna look great regardless on an LED.

Firstly

Do you mean OLED TV? or a LCD which is backlist with LEDs? There is a difference, the first costs $$$$$ the second costs $$$.

Personally I wouldn't get an OLED tv yet as of the price and because the tech is somewhat new for big screen TVs and the the major players are going in two directions, colored LEDS and white LEDS. One will give you better natural colours, the other better tones of blacks. Personally i want them to advance the tech and decide on which path is best based on results.

No, he's wrong, actually. A Google search will tell you. WiiU outputs everything to 1080p, whatever the native resolution. But it's upscaling. Pikmin 3, for example, runs at 720p natively, but WiiU scales that to 1080p. Your television will also tell you it's outputting a 1080p signal, but a LOT of the time, it's not native 1080p. Anyway, I believe it's been confirmed that Zelda WW HD, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros. will be in 1080p (maybe even at 60fps too, can't remember). The back of Japanese WiiU game cases actually mention the game's resolution.

I think means when a game is designed to natively run in 1080P.

Next Gen is having challenges with 1080P, espically with 60P.  I think Forza 5 is the only confirmed game at that, but their could be others.



 

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Because 1080p is a successful marketing gimmick.  A lot of people will be viewing TVs that are too small or will be too far away to notice the resolution difference.  But ah well.  Lets start saving our pennies for 4k.

Developers seem to realize most people don't really notice or care about the difference, and therefore they choose to use that extra fillrate to draw better effects, materials. etc.
Even on PS4/Xbone a lot of games are sub-1080p.

I have a LED tv and it blows my old LCD one out of the water. But, if you buy the WIIU because of its power... man, prepare to b disapointed...

Confirmed 1080p.

Monster Hunter 3G HD = 1920x1080 (no AA)
Rayman: Legends = 1920x1080 (no AA)
Splinter Cell Blacklist = 1920x1080
Assassins Creed III =  1920x1080
Call of Duty: Black Ops II = 1920x1080

Even if the games are rendered natively at 720p, isn't it better to have the console handling the upscaling to 1080p, than having it handled by the TV or other external hardware?

Generally yes, some TVs do horrible, horrible upscaling.

My previous TV was a 24" and Wii games looked appalling on it in upscaled 480p, then I got a 32" and despite the bigger screen the Wii actually looked better on it because of vastly superior upscaling.

The Wii U's upscaling is excellent in my experience.

Marketing Gimmick? The difference is highly noticable. It's 50% more pixels being displayed on the screen. What does distance have to do with anything? It isn't stretching a 720p image out. There is actually more on the screen as long as the fov isn't stupidly restricted.
