The $100m story behind the Xbox One controller

-snip-

"The final Xbox One controller may not look different on the outside, but inside it's remarkably different," says Alam.

Microsoft has spent more than $100 million on designing the Xbox One controller. It sounds like an extraordinary sum, but that includes the design of hundreds of pad prototypes, thousands of hours of user research studies, and creating new tooling and construction facilities. The project dragged on for two-and-a-half years.

"The investments in redesigning a controller go into the hundreds of millions of dollars in tooling and R&D costs. Bearing in mind we started with something that people considered best-in-class, the pressure to do it right again was tremendous.

"Honestly, some of us felt like we were putting our career on the line. We were afraid we were going to burn through $100 million and come back with an under-developed controller."

$100m on just a controller... wow...just wow.

Don't know if they are just using this number to impress people or they actually spent $100m. If people consider the previous controller "Best in class" then it seems stupid spending such a big amount on it. I can see why they were worried for their careers.

Making an indie game : Dead of Day!

i could understand if it was something radically different, but its not.. how much money are they losing on this console?

Way too much in my opinion.

Good job.

*I have to post this so MS fans don't complain that no one comments in their pro MS threads.

Now now.. Lets not overreact.. I'm sure there went 90 million dollars into developing a fingerprint scanner in the controller paid by the goverment for the NSA..

That seems a bit much for a controller with straight forward enhancements. Its not like anything on it is revolutionary. I'm sure its a rounded number, but 100m is very high for that single component.

That seems awfully high considering YOU are the controller.

All of the prototypes must have been made from gold and diamonds.

I don't know what is the bigger win... badgenome or basilzero...
