It has failed.

Nintendo don't belong in hardcore gamers rooms anymore. And since parents and grandparents have stopped buying their kids wii's, sales of the wiiu will never be like what they were a few years ago.

People calling it a failure don't get anything about this market obviously not because it is too early to tell but because it still have time to sell well thanks to its one year head start and because big games are already announced to release soon and a lot more can be expected in the future.

Games are what sell consoles, the only reason why WiiU isn't selling right now is because it lacks games but with all the huge system sellers Nintendo has there is no way this console won't sell a lot and no way third parties won't heavily support it especially as ports will be much easier to make this time. This is as simple as that and if you don't even get that then you better should not talk about video games sales to begin with.

calling the Wii U a faliure is like calling the PS4/Xbone a success IMO. we only know if it suceeded or not at the end of the gen not the beginning. by that logic the PS3 would be a faliure.

The WiiU is certainly in a much better position right now than the PS3 was after the same time period : its installed base is roughly at the same point but the competitors haven't released their next gen consoles yet so it will have an important advantage in terms of installed base. With this advantage the WiiU is right now in approximately the same position as the 360 at the beginning of the previous gen which lead the MS console to end up with an amazing third party support even if it wasn't initially that great.

With the Wii Nintendo also has proven that it doesn't even need a good third party support to make its console become an amazing success and there isn't any relevant argument to believe that the situation has changed enough for this not to happen again even in the less plausible and worst case scenario where third parties wouldn't support it that much.

It's not a failure, but it will never be a success, Not to many people are interested in a tablet for a controller

It will end up around the same as the vita

This is absurd. Vita won't have half of the big system sellers WiiU will have. People don't buy consoles for a concept but for the games. Even if there is no games that take a good advantage of the "tablet" it will still have all the big Nintendo games and this alone is enough to know that it will end up selling much better than the Vita. Also Vita has a huge disadvanatge in terms of installed base while the WiiU will have a strong advantage.

Depends on the context, calling it failure of a system launch, is absolutely fine but calling it a failure of a system is jumping the gun at this point. We haven't seen how the other systems will perform nor have we seen the Wii U even use a quarter of its potential since the best looking game before Pikmin 3 was Lego City Undercover and the best games that even use the controller beyond token usage are ZombiU and a enhanced port of a game over a year old (Batman: AC).

if a game sells 1 million its an astounding success, if a console sells 3-4m its a failure? okay.

So say you as the Vita drops  below the PSP again. The Wii U also overtook the Vita in North America and Japan this week after showing three weeks of stable sales growth. I expect it to taper off a little after Pikmin until we get a bit further into Nintendo's summer/ fall lineup. The Wii U will probably be between the PS3 and the rapidly tapering 360 by Christmas. The question is where will the other systems be.

Nintendo wanted to ship 5.5 Million Wii U systems by April 1st

Nintendo actually shipped 3.45 Million Wii U systems by April 1st

According to VGChartz, 3.3 Million Wii U systems have been sold by July 13th

The sheer definition of "failure" is something that has a lack of success. A failure is something that hasnt met expectations.

The Wii U, right now, is a failure by definition.

This isn't news to me and doesn't change the fact that calling something a failure is generally used as an all-around term, as I proved to Talal with his athlete example (unless you time-bound it or change the scope, ie launch was a failure).
