Forums - Gaming - “Certain” AAA IP Needs 10 Million Copies to Break Even says

Of all the new IPs, my guess would also be Destiny.

If this is true then it is even more hilarious that Cliffy B. and other devs continue to think that piracy and/or used game market is what kills studios.

This guy makes himself look more and more stupid each day.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

I'm very confident that he is talking about Destiny. Bungie has a very large team, they obviously are using a lot of high tech stuff and Activision has stated that they are investing a lot into Destiny. I don't think Destiny will have trouble breaking 10 million between 4 consoles.

The reason why I believe he is talking about Destiny is because he said new IP, he also said it was revealed at E3, if you look at the games revealed at E3 this year, you might think Titanfall or Destiny, or possibly a few others, but those are the most notable imo. I don't believe it's Titanfall because they have a relatively small team, and they are using the source engine, so they don't really have that much invested.

That says something about inefficient development....

10 million to break even reminds me about E.T. and Pac Man for Atari 2600 which were over-produced and needed millions just to offset productions costs of the 15 million plus catridges. This is worse though because studios like Nintendo, Infinity Games, and Polyphony Digital sell games which sell 10 million units, at a much much lower cost.

There's a very limited number of franchises that can really get there, and since he obviously isn't talking about Nintendo, about half of the possible franchises are eliminated.

The non-Nintendo 8-digit club is basically Gran Turismo, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and recently FIFA.

But he stated that is a NEW IP showed at E3.

They do realize that this is like having a budget of around 600 million. Just to break even. So they would need a lot more to make it worthwhile. 60 times 10 million.

You realize that publishers usually take in less than half of the $60 you get from a game sale.

Destiny or Titanfall, then.

Good luck to either of those, really. Both look exceptional, but can they really strike 10 million in a market mired by generational transition?

Destiny? Can't think of any other massive AAA new IP

GTAV or The Last of US. Or Pikmin 3, it was in development for many years!
