Forums - Gaming - If you think WiiU is still 7th gen, wouldn't that make the PS4 7th gen?

What Do you think?

Yup, by this logic your right 57 26.89%

No!! The PS4 isnt in 7th gen 92 43.40%

lets just start going by reasonable logic. 63 29.72%

Here's the main problem with anyone, fanboy or otherwise trying to use the word 'generation' to define graphical capability of video game systems released at about the same time; the word generation refers to a measure of time when a thing comes into existence and how long until the next thing comes along to replace it. Now the amount of time varies with what your talking about, in our case video game consoles its about 5-7 years. However, with people its 25-30 years, so you see how the definition can vary. So people to stop need to defining the word generation to mean graphics, use for it really means :time.

PS2 is not considered the weakest 6th gen console. It was more powerful than the Dreamcast which is a 6th gen console also. I just had to get that out there.

Wii U is a 7th gen console - Almost the same as PS3/360 graphically. Wii is a 6th gen console - It offered the same power the original Xbox had.

generations are not based on graphics or power. its chronology, the Wii was 7th gen and the Wii U is 8th gen.

But teh PS4 haz moar polygonz!

Exactly. It's like saying you're not of the same generation as your cousin because he can bench twice as much as you do and his IQ is much higher than yours, even though you're both the same age. =P

There were launch games on PS360 running at 1080p 60fps. If the Wii U already showed a nice difference then people wouldn't be having this conversation.

I love how you're making this huge deal out of the difference between the Wii U - PS360 but you say that the differences between it and the Xbone and PS4 are nothing big. Looking at RAM alone, Sony and MS's new consoles have 4 times as much, which is the same amount Wii U has over PS360. Estimations put the PS4 GPU at around 4-5 times as capable (in terms of FLOPS at least) as the Wii U's which is seemingly bigger than the difference between the Wii U and PS360.

Anyway, you're completely changing topic from the initial post. Either demonstrate that the PS2 was a smaller leap than the Wii U from their previous gens, respectively, or give it a rest.

I couldn't care less about ps2, this is about wii u and i can't stand this lie that it isn't much beyond what ps360 can do.

you mentioned RAM, well, devs did nothing but praise wii u's RAM. i guess that when you factor the memory that already has less latency and add the edram the actual performance is much more than 4x the ps360. and you can't exactly estimate the gflops difference when you don't know the number of flops of wii u.

AND there's the factor you always forget that's the modern technology and tools. ps360 are stuck with dx 9, shader model 3.0 and stuff like that while all the most recent version of those are common between wii u/ps4/xone. the difference lies in raw power alone and my estimate would be wii u x 2 = xone, xone x 1.5 = ps4. with the dev tools being the same between the 3 and engines getting more scalable than ever, that is not a big difference.

Ok. So the numbers are more important for you than the actual results, right? Until the Wii U actually proves itself, claiming the console is much more than 4x as pwerful as the PS360 when it has a hard running simple ports is really stretching it.

So far, nothing on the Wii U indicates much of a leap over the HD twins. Yes, it is going to offer better visuals down the line. But certainly not a generational leap.

Hum... no.

Your logic comprehension fails.

People don't really say the Wii U isn't a 8th gen console. They're saying it is a 7th gen console from a graphics and horse pwoer perspective. The PS2 was by the mean a 5th gen console when it comes to its power. It offered quite a huge leap forward. In fact, when it came out, it was more powerful than PCs for a short while.

Now, the Wii U offers roughly the same graphical/technical fidelity as the 7th gen HD twins. Yes, it is most likely slightly more powerful. But it's not the leap we get from one gen to an other since the beginning of the game consoles history. Definitely not the leap we got from PS1 to PS2, PS2 to PS3, or PS3 to PS4.

This guy makes sense here a free cake

You know what the funniest thing is?

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

I base it on graphics and power, that's just my opinion. I don't want to keep playing games with the same 8 yo graphics for another 7-8 years.

I'll consider it a 7th gen console, untill I see something mind blowing that I haven't seen on PS3/360 coming out on it.

go read a little before, I started by saying the ACTUAL RESULTS prove wii u's superiority over ps360.

ports don't run well? than why are there announced non ports that are also more demanding running much better and in 720/1080p 60fps? black magic? if you truly want to use lame ports to try bashing wii u then read this first: http://www.gamespot.com/features/xbox-vs-xbox-360-do-you-really-need-hd-6140621/
