Forums - Movies & TV - I will pay more money for a non-3D movie when watching it in theaters

It pretty much is. On PCs, Nvidia 3D vision supports has dried up and on consoles it was never worthwhile to begin with. The 3e capable monitors on PC are mostly used for fast twitch 2D gaming.

Here is the latest 3d monitor from asus, you wont even know its 3d unless you scroll all the way down...

The Lightboost tech though. My god. Every TV/Monitor should have it combined with 120hz or more, the fluidity is insane, almost at CRT levels.
In-fact I'm surprised Cinema's and TV's havent done something similar to Lightboost.

Still, I wouldn't buy it, I would rather rip my eyes out than have to endure 1080P, TN panel.

Go Redbox and Netflix (if you are in USA). I haven't seen a movie in the theaters since a Bond movie (not Skyfall, saw that with Redbox). Not even sure why I even went to the movie theater for it... Movie theaters are overpriced and a dying breed.

I only go to theaters for 3D movies, since I got Netflix, but I plan on replacing Netflix with Hulu Plus for every reason.

Just saw World War Z and while the movie was great, the 3D was not...

3D in theaters offers a darker screen since you're only getting half of the light to each eye, its out of focus unless you get good seats right in the middle and is absolutely not necessary for a movie like World war Z.

3D for gaming still has some merit and some movies do benefit from it, but why do over 50% of movies today have to utilize tacked on 3D I have no idea...

When is this 3D fad going to die? I've been fooling around with 3D since 2008 and at this point I will at this point pay a higher movie ticket premium to avoid 3D at all cost.

3d for gaming is pretty much dead no?

The Nintendo 3DS is selling more then 300,000 a week, and it keeps getting more greater software support with each month that goes by...it's like support overload LOL.

Plus it does 160Mtriangle/s & has over 50 shader cores (PICA200 GPU) and you can adjust the volume of 3D so even you can enjoy it, and the screen gets brighter with the 3D ON. And theres a 3DS XL for a way bigger screen.

Thankfully 3D seems to be on the decline. Cinema's in my area are showing more and more 2D sessions and less 3D. 3D TV's are on the increase, but that is only because the better TV's also support 3D, I doubt many are buying them for that. Both my TV's support 3D, neither of them will ever have a 3D movie played on them, in fact I ebay'ed the set of glasses that came with them to get some of the money back for that useless feature.

There where 45 3D Movies in 2012.

There are around 80 3D movies in 2913 as shown here:

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=154457

The decline & incline of 2D showings depends on your town, which depends on sales at that individual theater outlet of any cinema business.

Haven't you read the comments of other users on this thread reporting a dramatic increase of 3D showings in their American cinemas with the 2D showings having a decline recently?

There are more towns & cities in America with an decline in 2D showings, and incline in 3D showings. Just because your one city is one of the few doing the opposite, doesn't mean it represents every cinema in America.

I personally already have Netflix, so what do I need to spend money to see a movie in 2D in theaters for.

i hate 3D purely because the picture is so dark. its very annoying

Just get a Nintendo 3DS XL & a active 3D glasses 3D TV and the picture will only get brighter when you turn 3D ON.

There, problem solved.

I would suggest that with your preference, that you should buy a 3D TV ($300+) & 3D Blu-Ray Player ($50+), and just wait for the movie to come out on 3D Blu-Ray to watch Live-Action movies.

Problem solved.

The 3D makes everything brighter on the Nintendo 3DS XL & active 3D glasses 3D TVs.
You now got no excuses to avoid 3D.

I hope 4K movies will get directors back to shooting and editting for 2D without all the restrictions imposed by 3D.

Walter Murch still sums it up best:
http://www.rogerebert.com/rogers-journal/why-3d-doesnt-work-and-never-will-case-closed

The biggest problem with 3D, though, is the "convergence/focus" issue. A couple of the other issues -- darkness and "smallness" -- are at least theoretically solvable. But the deeper problem is that the audience must focus their eyes at the plane of the screen -- say it is 80 feet away. This is constant no matter what. But their eyes must converge at perhaps 10 feet away, then 60 feet, then 120 feet, and so on, depending on what the illusion is.

Consequently, the editing of 3D films cannot be as rapid as for 2D films, because of this shifting of convergence: it takes a number of milliseconds for the brain/eye to "get" what the space of each shot is and adjust.

And lastly, the question of immersion. 3D films remind the audience that they are in a certain "perspective" relationship to the image. It is almost a Brechtian trick. Whereas if the film story has really gripped an audience they are "in" the picture in a kind of dreamlike "spaceless" space. So a good story will give you more dimensionality than you can ever cope with.

It's no wonder most succesful 3D movies are CGI amusement park ride material. When it comes to story people either don't notice the 3D or find it distracting. I rather get lost in the movie while letting my eyes wander over all the details, 3D lessens that for me. Keep it for games where you control the camera and perspective.

Or maybe I'm just old, as one of the the conclusions of this article states

I disagree. I thought it was bad in 3D (and 2D).

I hate the 3D on my 3DS XL. The ghosting is just really horrible. Sometimes when I play Donkey Kong, I move the system just a little bit and can't see anything. Then I die. That's why I always play with 3D off. It's nice when you see it for the first time, but it gets old with time.

I also happen to have a 3D TV, but I barely use that feature anymore. I played Killzone 3 in 3D but it just doesn't add anything. Instead, it tires my eyes.

I think there is a pretty good reason why most TV manufacturers do not advertise 3D anymore (at least where I live). Sure modern TVs are all capable of doing 3D and so the sales of 3D TVs do increase on paper. But nobody really wants it all that much.

But don't get me wrong, I don't want 3D to disappear. If you have fun with it, that's fine by me. I just want 2D to stay, that's all.
