I'm still in the middle of it (I want to play it right now, but I agreed to only play it with my girlfriend because she enjoys watching it or occasionally getting mauled by a clicker), and I can see where the OP is coming from.
From what I played so far, the game offers so much polish and so much thought into its game play systems that it does raise the standard for what a video game could be. From the way supplies are handled to the finite nature of many weapons to the mix and match of stealth versus action peppered with exploration to give the player a few scenic valleys between those peaks, the entire experience so far is incredibly engaging. And I've yet to rave about the story, graphics or performances.
Even so (and I'm still a ways from finishing), I haven't seen anything that is so groundbreaking that it makes other games unplayable. I'd probably liken it to something like Half Life 2 (which now is outdated in certain aspects of mechanics but for its time was a marvel). Even at its release, it didn't do anything absolutely ground breaking. Sure the physics were awesome, but the real draw was the overall polish and consideration the developers put into making their game one in which people could truly immerse themselves in. But 9 years later, people are still playing Mario and CoD and that's not going to stop now that TLOU raised the bar. We gamers need variety and sometimes simple fun is the name of the game.
