Forums - Gaming - PS3 version DMC takes 22 minutes to install!!!

@ MikeB - So would you say that the 5gb of data is used to reduce the load times by 1 sec? or is it to help compensate for the seek time of the drive? or a mix of both?

Transitions to gameplay from starting menus are relatively close, frequently within half a second or so of each other, but when you're loading up a cutscene or having another pause in the action, the 360's times are easily three times that of the PS3. - IGN

@LordAkhenUlv:

I think people are upset because the install is mandatory. It sets an unhealthy precedent for the future of the industry. If it was optional it wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal.

Hates Nomura.

I'd much rather install it once for 22 minutes while I'm eating dinner or drinking a few beers--and have NO loadtimes for the rest of the gaming experience when I DO have to sit in front of the tv and wait.

The 22 minute install doesn't matter because I don't have to sit there and wait on it--I can do something else why it's installing.

But eitherway, who cares? Nit-pick issue.

If I was a 20GB owner, I would be pretty pissed off, cause this is taking up 1/4 of the hard drive space

Most people bought a higher specced model. But you can uninstall the game when done or upgrade your PS3's harddrive (towards 120 GB, 160 GB, 200 GB, etc).

With regard to installing needing to be mandatory or not, I think devs will have to decide upon a game to game

basis and weigh the advantages and disadvantages.

I totally agree. I have that model, though I am planning on upgrading the drive to a 120gb after a few more sales. But seriously, I don't mind loading times. Gameplay is what I am worried about.

@madskillz LOL My cousin hates the install after download. We actually downloaded the uncharted demo twice and both times it error during the installation. My cousin was so pissed he gave up lol. I still want to play it but will have to wait until I can get my own ps3. It may run better by a few seconds which may or may not equal the 20 minutes install time. I am sure most people won't mind but it is annoying.

What can you do about the install? That's sort of the whole point about it, you have to install the demo. Maybe it's because I have my PC that I've been doing that for years so the installing and uninstalling doesn't phase me at all, but oh well.

Usually if there is an error problem when installing a demo for, sometimes multiple attempts at installing might work. I usually try to hold off on demo's until when I go home for a weekend because a good cable modem at home trumps the crappy DSL at my apartment and that means 30 minutes to an hour to download a demoat home compared to hours at the apartment.

----

Anyway, I don't really see any problem. Maybe it's because I usually do other things while I'm installing a demo or installing game content. Perhaps people should try to get a snack, grab something to drink, study some course work, or even do a #2 while a game is installing. Works for me and I'm sure it'll work for you.

heh i actually installed it via PSP remote play while watching tv :P. but i dint get teh error message

You'll probably experience better load times nomatter if you care or not. The 20 GB drive is slower than the 60 GB drive, considering all the differences and extras I always advised early adopters to get the 60 GB PS3 version instead.

Uncharted was designed to have no install and non-existant in-game load times. I think it's a nice approach, but shouldn't be mandatory for developers as it can lead to unnecessary sacrifices, I think those having lots of space to spare on their harddrive would be pissed with Sony if that would have been the case.
