Yeah I could see it happening. People have to really look at the Steam model. You get some REALLY good prices for new titles, and people don't bitch there about no used games.

But I think the problem with console gamers are a majority (or a majority of the minority that is extremely vocal) is always about sharing and having an actual boxed product. However, I'm all for sexy boxes with goodies that just have digital codes for said game.

Also broadband still has to expand. It has to be available more and more WW in 8 years, and companies like ATT and Comcast need to raise the gig caps considering games will be even larger in size.

people bitched about steams used game policies but stopped when the prices were great. if microsoft wants to become like steam they can on the xbox one. just make the prices drop like steam and everybody will go digital and their will be a choice for others who want a physical copy for those you want to buy it.

another thing is that PC gaming is different from console gaming. sharing with friends, playing with friends and family has always been a big part of console gaming, by going the steam route they are killing that off. why is it the best option for the console market to have the restrictions of the PC market that doesnt care about sharing and playing games with others? super smash bro's, halo, gran turismo and so much other games have been widely successfull because of playing and sharing with others. why is it the future of console gaming to kill that?

also i laugh everytime somebody says that microsoft wants to become like steam so they will make everybody go digital then the prices will drop. why? why do we have to swallow the bad aspects of steam first? why do we have to wait until microsoft decides to even START dropping these prices? why do we have to "trust" a cooperation that loves money to drop prices? people went to steam when they dropped the prices, it shouldnt happen the other way around. 

also on steam you have the choice of buying your games from other places, on xbox (or PS or nintendo for that matter) you DO not. and thats a HUGE difference

I predict this gen Microsoft will turn "always on" and DRM back on because there will be no "next gen". I also predict you will be able to assemble your own Xbox One within 5 years on Dell.com and choose from 5 different hardware models at Best buy.

Don't want bluray drive and want better bigger hard drive?...no problem. Xbox One and PS4 are essentially software running on a x86 Pc architecture.


microsoft will only say that their current generation platform is the last one once they get that console in everybodies house. if the X1 sells as many units as the 360 you can bet they will make a new gen after it so they can reach more households. they want it to be in the center of the living room and they want to control it. 

also, you wont be able to assemble your X1 from 3rd party publishers, at that point the hardwar will be cheap and even much more cheaper to make. the profit margins will be huge and they wont give that up

Next console will just be a kinect v3 and use the cloud... $200 for console $75 xbl a year

Why do you think that consoles will not go down this route? It seems similar to the progression of cassettes->Cd's-> digital dl. It seems like physical media is going to eventually die off.

Profit margins on gaming hardware? Whaaa? Where? When did this happen? I thought it was common knowledge that hardware gets sold at cost, or under cost and then games make the money back.

Only way these consoles will survive is if they spread their seed and get their software on as many devices as possible. They need to penetrate the livingroom any way they can... There are like 10 different android based machines that do TV and gaming, Apple TV gets redesigned every year and has a massive amount of games available for cheap that are really good, Rokku is doing great things with TV, steamboxes are coming and they will cost from 200-2000 bucks...all shapes and sizes

Google has really changed the industry with Android and smartphones, tablets and even laptops. Windows 8 is following the same model. You will not see Windows 9 any time soon, but instead you will see yearly update software cycles and yearly hardware revision.  Hardware doesn't matter anymore...it lives and then it dies when something better comes along. Software and everything you purchase thoughr lives on (since its digital and transferrable). 

Hence why digital > physical in this day and age.  Hence why this "digital online DRM is the devil" thread is so messed up...

next next gen will be all digital or even streaming only and not only from microsoft, also from sony. and almost nobody will miss it, same like we have now on pc.

at the start of the gen thats how sony and mircosoft have done bussines, but after a few years they start to make money off of the hardware. the PS3 has been making a profit on hardware after early 2010 and that is with an extremely expensive to build piece of hardware. The Wii/DS has made shitloads off of hardware alone.

you keep talking about these benifits of DRM and always online yet i dont see microsoft doing any of them with the xbox 1. " yet i see no backwards compatiblity with the xbox1. i see no cheaper prices on xbox live and i see no advantages what so ever. microsoft is all talk about the advantages with no action. but when it comes to restrictions and anti-consumer policies they are all in for it. but of course, you will never admit it nor will you stop this defending it, you have your own reason and i honestly dont care for it. things are laid out in a very simple manner for you but we both know what your reaction will be like
