Forums - Gaming - Why is buying used games such a big deal nowadays?

What some puplishers didnt know. Many People sold there old games to buy new ones. Not everybody has the Money to purchase everygame new. Used games are important for the industry.

If I buy a game, and then I want to lend/sell it to my friend, why should he have to pay extra when The publisher already mad their money, even if i go to gamestop and trade it in, that game is my property and I have every right to sell it.
If I buy a Ford Focus, drive it, decide to get a new car, I turn my Focus in get a Jetta, use my focus as payment, someone else buys my used Focus from that VW dealer, does Ford deserve money from that transaction?
If I buy a used DVD do I have to pay Universal for viewing it on my DVD player?
same for any electronic device, Phones, Laptops, Furniture, Homes, Auto Parts.
We already pay Xbox Live, pais for the system and that used copy being sold its a copy that was already purchased at full price.

Because people are to Cheap to buy new. WOW!

So I have to get a shitty as game because everyone is cheap. C'mon.

Not every game needs to be AAA and just because a game doesnt cost 50 million or ehatever big blockbuster games cost, doesnt make them bad. They should focus on gameplay not graphics and other bullshit that raise the production costs. Were seeing games that dont sell mutliple millioms being considered failures.

Square Enix is a good example, Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman failed to meet sales expectations despite there being no reason SE thought they would sell that well.

THQ going under despite having 2 big franchises in Saints Row and Darksiders even tho those games were successful.

Idk maybe drop the budget in half and sell games at $40, they wont have to sell as many units to make the money and people will be more willing to try nee games.

Also I like the games how they are, thank you very much. Why should the standards drop to those who are so cheap they don't even support their favorite game producers. I know people in my family that always buy used, Always. One I talked out of it. however to many cheap skats out there. Sorry but I would rather check in than deal with more closing, cheaper games play and less visuals to satisfy all that, that can never be satisfied.

Oh also, if they drop the price to $40, gamestop will just beat them by $5 bucks. People are cheap. How about the game comes down because it's so profitable they are able to do it, just to keep selling it.

Im not saying standards need to be dropped but if a game sells 3 million copies but doesnt turm a profit then theres something wrong and blocking used games isnt the answer. I dont usually buy used games but I sell my games after a few play throughs to fund buying new games since I cant shell out $60 every month for games.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Without getting into anything else, the "make a game people will play over and over" idea is pretty awful. That will just result in games falling into a few genres while killing others. I don't want everything to be massive open world or online multi-player.

Hilariously illogical.

think about want you just said.

Maybe you should think about it, because what he says makes full sense. Used games facilitate the purchase of more full price new games.

People who buy used games, would not buy them at full price.

Really, its pretty simple to understand. Acting high and mighty doesnt make you right, especially when you dont make a case.

It's a manufactured crisis. If a game needs to sell 2 million to be profitable then it needs to be an good quality game with reasonably wide gamer appeal. The existence of a used game market doesn't have a big effect.

There was a suggestion that publisher revenue would go up by 18% if there were no used games. Think about that. How many studios that went out of business did so because they were only 18% away from viability? I would suggest none. If a game needs to sell 2 million to be acceptably profitable then with used games that 18% figure means to only need to convince about 2.35 million people to want to play it. But if only 1 million people want to play it eliminating used game sales isn't going to help you.

Also used game sales puts a game into more people's hands. If you're looking to establish a franchise then having a substantial number of people buy the first game used improves the chances of the second game in the franchise achieving sales growth, both in terms of launch window sales and lifetime sales.

I bet used game sales of Uncharted:DF helped to make Uncharted 2 a great success.

Do you think Insomniac would not be failing hard with Fuse if there was no used games? Fuse is going to be a money loser for Insomniac and EA because it's not a very good game and it only has limited appeal. It's failure can't be blamed on used games.

Can any game's failure to be profitable really be blamed on used games? I read David Cage say that Heavy Rain was less successful because of used game sales, but he didn't say it was a commercial failure, it wasn't.

If you consistently make good games you will profit year after year even with a thriving used game market.

If you are inconsistent in the quality of games you make you will have profitable years and unprofitable years even if there's no used game market.

I lose my faith in humanity when I see so many people swallowing the bullshit put put out by publishers and developers about how evil the used game market is. As if the trading in used goods is somehow unique to video games, and that the video game industry should somehow have special rights to prevent used product trading. It's bullshit.

Games are also in general selling better then they used to. Before the PS2 era it was unheard of to see a 3rd party game break 10 million units sold, now games like CoD sell 20 million annually.

I don't necessarily disagree with your point, but this post bugs me.

The big change with this generation is sales required to make a profit. It's a lot higher than it was in the past, where most big games could sell a few hundred-thousand units and make profit. Now we are starting to see studios cancelling IPs or shutting down because of 1m, 2m and even 3m selling games not making enough profit.

Yes, gaming is getting bigger, which means the biggest games today will be bigger than the biggest games of yesterday. However, that's only beneficial for the big AAA games. The small-medium sized games that sell 1-3 million units are important too, and these are the very type of games who are susceptible to little to no profit as a result of rising development costs.

I agree that banning used games is not the ideal solution to the problem of rising costs. Heck, I would even concede that the problem may be solved in the near future with digital distribution, easier development kits, etc. (maybe it will, maybe it won't. I don't know). However, do not say that the problem is solved by a bigger gaming market, since that's not true.

Games that are not that good are still sold because the buyer thinks he can resell it. So its good in a sense. Also not all people can buy $60-$40 game. Americans should think outside their territory as earning capacity is average for most people around the world, and still they need and want to game.

It's because of terrible project planning, which leads to bloated budgets and missed forecasts (38 Studios, Square Enix, Team Bondi, THQ, etc). Used game sales is just the scapegoat.

Because games are cheaper now compared to what they were 20 years ago yet game budgets have skyrocketed. Technology is way beyond what it was 20 years ago. Games were simpler back then and didn't require studios of 500 people. Now the fact you have people who never give 1 cent to publishers. They go to Gamestop and purchase a copy used to save $5, then later on trade that copy in on another used copy and so forth. Indie developers are basically making what were considered full fledged $50-$60 games 20 years ago but now they cost $15. We expect more for less now. Either the games industry crashes or we must change.
