Forums - Gaming - Why is buying used games such a big deal nowadays?

@Juma009
Every single product you listed loses value and functionality over time. Eventually a car will not run as well used as new and you have to put money into it. Everything you put on your list follows this same principle except for games which are expected to perform the exact same as new. DVDs aren't an argument as well since movie are exclusively in movie theaters for months before being sold. If you want games to be handled similar to movies then they should make them digital download only for the first 3 months then you can purchase discs and used after.

Blame online passes and Microsoft. Also, i agree it's definitely greed

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

'When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called the people's stick'- Mikhail Bakunin

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

Well maybe developers should cut down on the CGI/cutscenes and actually make the games longer with alot of replay value... just a thought

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

Because games are cheaper now compared to what they were 20 years ago yet game budgets have skyrocketed.

Developers/Publishers have found other ways to get increased revenue with in-game advertising, DLC, Micro-transactions on smaller stuff like guns or ammo, Season Passes... You name it.
If anything games have gotten allot more expensive to get "everything".

Games were simpler back then and didn't require studios of 500 people. Now the fact you have people who never give 1 cent to publishers. They go to Gamestop and purchase a copy used to save $5, then later on trade that copy in on another used copy and so forth. Indie developers are basically making what were considered full fledged $50-$60 games 20 years ago but now they cost $15. We expect more for less now. Either the games industry crashes or we must change.

Thank you!

Last I checked, the used game industry was larger in the past then it is today, but I hear more and more about how used games are bad for the industry. Why? The industry did perfectly fine with used games for the 30 years between 1983-2013, and we even had corporations make money of "renting" games for a fraction of the price of the game now. Plus back then games didn't have online multiplayer, and more games were single player, so it was very common for people to spend $5 on a brand new game, beat it in a rental or two, and then return it, and never play it.

Yet the gaming industry grew, significantly over the last 30 years. Why is it a problem now?

I think it's greed, publishers like EA and Microsoft know they can now get more new games sales by making online passes and consoles which require you to buy the game now. Technology like this didn't exist even just 5 years ago, but now that it does, publishers are taking advantage of this, and gamers, and whining that they don't get all the money they want.

If you want people to keep your games, and not sell them to Gamestop, and cut your profits, then make a game which people will want to keep and play over and over. I'm not a big fan of Call of Duty, but I can tell you that it sells so amazing because people who do play Call of Duty, tend to play it online regularly, which means that they have to own the game, and not sell it. People who buy Zelda, or FallOut, typically take a long time to beat the game, and then often keep it since it's good and they don't want to part with it. Some games don't sell well, it happens, especially when most new games now are so completely unoriginal, and release onto a shooter saturated market.

I mean Square-Enix exists today because of their "Final Fantasy" to make a quality game that would either make or break their company. You never see devs make risks like that anymore, not even the big publishers.

So I think people should stop whining, buy used games if they feel to, and let the bad devs die out. Too bad for EA, they can't hog all the money they make off franchise rights (NFL, Porsche), and then complain that used games are killing the industry. What about them? I would like porsche in Gran Turismo, and I'd rather have EA make a proper racing game, to attract my attention then get Porsche exclusivity.

UMMMMMM NO!

It was never this massive. Game stops earnings have never been seen in the gaming market. Plus Piracy. So not sure where you are getting your info but I lived in the 80's, you couldn't get used games. You had to buy new. If you where lucky you could. Plus the cost has went way up.

Hmmm...I lived in the 80's too and there were several places around me that you could trade/sell/buy used games.

The publishers that control their budgets and produce quality games make tons of money.  You don't want people selling/trading their used games so soon after release, make a game that people want to keep. It's simple really.  Sadly, too many publishers want to make a crap game with a big name attached to it and make tens of millions of dollars from it.  Just like the 80's things haven't changed there either.

Stop hating and start playing.

Because their budgets are getting bigger and the sales of their games dont compensate for it, and developers found something else to blame.

Probably because publishers are barely making a profit, or even not making a profit at all.

How come that publishers like Xseed and Atlus, for example, can live well in this industry publishing games that sell lower than 500k? Publishers ARE making a profit, it's just that the profit the big publishers are getting isn't the amount of money they want.
