Probably because publishers are barely making a profit, or even not making a profit at all.

Maybe they should cut back their budgets

Because people are to Cheap to buy new. WOW!

So I have to get a shitty as game because everyone is cheap. C'mon.

Not every game needs to be AAA and just because a game doesnt cost 50 million or ehatever big blockbuster games cost, doesnt make them bad. They should focus on gameplay not graphics and other bullshit that raise the production costs. Were seeing games that dont sell mutliple millioms being considered failures.

Square Enix is a good example, Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs and Hitman failed to meet sales expectations despite there being no reason SE thought they would sell that well.

THQ going under despite having 2 big franchises in Saints Row and Darksiders even tho those games were successful.

Idk maybe drop the budget in half and sell games at $40, they wont have to sell as many units to make the money and people will be more willing to try nee games.

Buying used games shouldn't be a big deal. That being said a lot of times you can buy a game new cheaper or for the same price of a used copy if you shop around a bit.

It was never this massive. Game stops earnings have never been seen in the gaming market. Plus Piracy. So not sure where you are getting your info but I lived in the 80's, you couldn't get used games. You had to buy new. If you where lucky you could. Plus the cost has went way up.

Duh, GameStops earnings were a lot smaller back in the day, before they bought Electronic Boutique, for a number of reasons. Smaller video game market, rental video game market, and competition (EB was a separate chain, plus Microplay and other chains). Now Gamestop owns the gaming market.

Remember the original Gameboy only sold 118 million units over 12 years. That's 10 million a year on average. GBA sold 80 in 3/4 years, and DS sold 150 in 7. PS3/360/Wii combined will sell about 300 million units, SNES/Genesis/TurboGraphix didn't even hit 100 million combined. The market is A LOT bigger now.

Also, YES piracy, a much bigger problem on PS1 and PS2 then it was on PS3 and probably now. PSP and DS were a lot easier to pirate then 3DS and Vita

So why the whining about buying games used now? Yes it's a more competetive market, but just like cars, this just means we see a lot less crap around (remember the crap on Atari 2600?).

Also I like the games how they are, thank you very much. Why should the standards drop to those who are so cheap they don't even support their favorite game producers. I know people in my family that always buy used, Always. One I talked out of it. however to many cheap skats out there. Sorry but I would rather check in than deal with more closing, cheaper games play and less visuals to satisfy all that, that can never be satisfied.

Oh also, if they drop the price to $40, gamestop will just beat them by $5 bucks. People are cheap. How about the game comes down because it's so profitable they are able to do it, just to keep selling it.

This is why smaller studios (like many Japanese studios) are shifting to handheld games. Studio's should make WiiU/3DS/Vita games, and if successful, then they can make larger IP's.

After all it's not the budget of the game that determines success, it's how popular the game is. Platinum Studios has made some really amazing games which have all sold poorly, yet the company is making a large profit, and a name for themselves now (with games published by Nintendo and Konami now).

If Platinum Studios can make an excellent game with a small budget, then that's the standard we expect from devs. If SE or CAPCOM rely on major IP's, which sell well, but below expectations, and this hurts them financially, well.....maybe they need restructuring (just like General Motors did).

All this makes me believe, if we buy used games, yes we put devs in more of a pinch, but more competition breeds better quality in games. Just compare the number of well reviewed games on 7th gen consoles to 4th or 5th gen consoles. We have so much more, and it's all because of competition.

LOL, but competiton is what's making our games better. If we just buy new, then we encourage devs to over-rely on large franchises.

If devs want their games to sell, they should make games people want to keep. Last I check used copies of Bioshock still sell for a lot, I guess people like that game so much they want to keep it, and now we have more Bioshock games.

---

Just FYI, I buy games new, but only when it's something I know I'm going to keep, and it's a game I really want. I only buy used when it's a game I don't care too much for, and by the time I buy it it's a $20 game. I buy most of my games for about $20, I refuse to spend anymore unless it's really worth it.

That's exactly my counter arguement, why should standards drop? I've always bought a game new, often day 1, if I was really really hyped about it. If a dev can't get us hyped about a game anymore, and they are struggling, well maybe we shouldn't see games like this anymore.

People are cheap, like I said, I buy most of my games for $20, but that's all because of competition. All competition is doing is forcing people to make better games so they stand a chance at surviving. You can't just stick on a label anymore and be okay, it's not enough to just make a new Resident Evil game, if it's not good, it won't sell, and all this will do is make Capcom either scrap the series, and give it a serious make over. This is why we don't see as much shovelware as we used to (like many Atari 2600 games).

Maybe if publishers come out and tells us the reasons why they want used games blocked, people would understand.I don't know if this is possible, but what about this? Each game has a unique code. When you put it in the console, the code goes into a server (whatever you would call it) and is stored there. When you trade it in to Gamestop, they can retrieve the code from the server, and it will treat the game as a new copy. You can still lend your games out without any restrictions. But once Gamestop retrieves the code, Publishers make money off of it when the used game is purchased.

Maybe not where you lived but used games have been widely available in large parts of the US since the late 80's.  They had a couple of Funcoland locations where I live DFW area as long as I can remember and I moved there from Germany in 1988.  Also Blockbuster stores also used to sell used games for as long as I can remember plus there are tons of pawn and other used goods stores that also always carried some used video games.
