Nintendo is a company with a vast range of unique IPs. They have platformers, action RPG's, strategy games, on rails shooters, simulations, fighters, etc.

The problem is, one section of their IP's is getting made: Platformers. It seems that is the only genre Nintendo is interested in these days. Let's look at the facts

SInce 2007, Nintendo has made 17 platformers across DS Wii Wii U and 3DS. 17 is a pretty big number.  Now look toward the future, we already have 4 platformers announced for 2013-2014. Nintendo doesn't bother with any of their shooter franchises: (starfox, Metroid) or their racing franchises barring mario kart: (f-zero, wave race, 1080 snoboarding). It's seemingly all platformers lately, and it's really making me less enthusiastic about Nintendo systems. Heck, they even make an exclusive deal with Sega, and what do we get? Another platformer. I love platformers as much as the next guy, but it's exhausting to only get platformers. Nintendo needs to balance out their portfolio a bit more. Back in the Gamecube days, we got a little bit of everything. With third parties avoiding Nintendo like the plague, it's up to Nintendo to fill those gaps, and they are doing a poor job of it.

You could take any company besides Nintendo.

Replace shooter with platformer and get the same result. It's not just Nintendo, it's the general industry.

I disagree, Sony has had pretty good diversity.

Little big planet games-2D plat

Infamous- Open world superhero

Uncharted- 3rd person set piece shooter

God of War- Action brawler?

Killzone-FPS

Motorstorm-Off road arcade racing

Gran Turismo- Realistic racing

Sly 4- Stealth plat

Twisted Metal- Vehicular Combat

Heavy Rain-Story game

People buy Nintendo games and systems to play the classical franchises that they have known and loved since childhood.

Just look at the sales, from a purely business perspective their current focus on platformers is a very logical choice.

i agree with that 100%. im pretty sure down the road, nintendo will counter the lack of third party suppot by investing the money they gain from the platformers into making new ips for all genres

look it this way. the WiiU and the 3ds already have a mario kart, 2dMario, 3DMario, DK game and this in their early cycle, which means if we expect another patformer that would be another 3DMario. after that its all new stuff no more Mario :D (platformer)

i hope....

Looks like you are just looking for a scapegoat. There's currently no Metroid, Star Fox or F-Zero announced (the games you want to play), so you single out platformers and pretend that not much else existed in the last eight years and won't exist in the next twelve months. If you don't want a new platformer, there have been, are and will be plenty of Nintendo games that are not platformers.

You should have just said that you want Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero games without dragging other games into this.

Well sure there are a few exceptions ( Fire Emblem, Zelda) But the ratio of platformer to other genres is staggering.  What I'm saying is that since around 2007, Nintendo has basically focused far more on platformers, when there used to be a bigger diversity in game genres. Metroid star fox and F-zero were just examples.

Well lets look at the exclusives coming in the nrxt 12months

Pikmin 3 & W101-both RTS but the gameplay of each is vastly different, one is super fast paced while the other is slower and more strategic

Wind Waker HD-adventure

Sonic Lost World, DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario 3D World-all 3 are platformers but different kinds, 2D, 3D single player, 3D co-op

Smash Bros-fighting

Mario Kart 8-racing

X-action RPG

Bayonetta-hack n slash

Wii Party-mini game collection

Wii Fit-fitness

So id say theres quite a bit of variety coming

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

It's perfectly fine that Nintendo creates many Platformers. They do it (very) well, and it seems like almost no one else in the industry pays anywhere near as much as Nintendo does to the genre.

Just because there is more of a focus on one genre doesn't mean Nintendo can't still work on/put effort into another.

But they really haven't been working on other genres. They have all but abandoned the racing genre besides Mario Kart. They don't have any FPS, which is fine by me, but it's still a gap in their library. No shooters really of any kind with the abandonement of Star Fox. They put minimal effort into RPG's.  They have one action series in Zelda which has been decreasing in quality for years, and Metroid is all but dead and buried.

Another problem with their focus on platformers, is that their has been a dip in quality for Mario. The NSMB games keep coming back with diminishing returns, and now they are making the first 3D Mario game I've ever seen that looks like a dud.
