Well DKC 3 is the only title in the series to not pass 5 million. Every 3D Mario have passed 5 million. Wii Fit is a sequel to a game that sold over 20m, it wont sell nearly that well but 5m isnt out of the question. Pikmin, Wind Waker, Sonic all have potenial to sell 2m+.

There is plenty of potential, but I wouldn't say any of those games are guaranteed right now. The Wii U is selling so badly, and the competition is doubling, so I would only really be sure of their most consistent ones. That would normally be 3D Mario as well as Kart and Smash, but the reception hasn't been that great for 3D World.

We've got a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation here. Some people think the holiday titles won't sell well because Wii U sales are so low, while others (like me) think Wii U sales are so low because they don't have those titles out yet.

As I said before, apart from the most devoted fans it takes more than 1 or 2 games to justify the purchase of a brand new console. The end of year lineup will provide those additional games for people on the fence and then Wii U will do just fine.

Thats how I see it too, not many people will buy a $350 console for 2D Mario but I think alot of people will buy a $300 console for 2D Mario, 3D Mario, DKC, Zelda, Pikmin, Sonic, W101, Wii Party/Fit.

No. I'm afraid that we're past the era in gaming when one game is enough to convince many people to buy a system.

But putting SM3DW and DKC together is very enticing. Platformer fans would be crazy not to buy a Wii U at that point. The rest of us probably should hold out for Mario Kart.

So Wii U will only be exciting for playformer fans then? If that's the case, shouldn't the combo of NSMBU and Sonic LW have sold the console as well? Or NSMBU, Sonic and either of SM3DW/DKCTF? Those three platformers would have been enough for platformers, and we might have gotten another game instead from Retro...

Not really. Sonic is not as big as Mario or DKC, and it's ideal to have another huge platformer franchise on board at least as an alternative to Mario.

Not really.
- Wii Fit U will sell way less than Wii Fit - the craze is over. Similar to Nintendogs >>> Nintendogs+Cats
- Wind Waker is a remake (and didn't sell that well the first time around)
- Donkey Freeze: Nobody seemed to really want another one, judging from E3 reactions
- Mario 3D World: As you said - NSMBU probably seemed like a safe bet for Nintendo, being from the bestselling 2D NSMB series, and it flopped so far. 3D World doesn't look very different from the NSMB games on the surface... and it's 3D, which has always sold less than 2D Mario. Not sure if they can make it a hit.

Why are so many people doubting Super Mario 3D World? It might not be a system seller for the people who frequent gaming sites, but the GP will definitely take notice. A price cut this Holiday would help a ton too and be a nice combo for Wii U sales.

I agree, to most it might seem like the true sequel to NSMB Wii, basically New Super Mario Bros 3

thank you!  Haven't seen anyone else take notice to this yet.

I would say that is normally true, but I'm not sure these titles are the ones to push people to buy the console. I think the timing is off; they should have had these titles over the summer to build up the library, then Kart and Smash to have a strong holiday.

As it stands most of the informed buyers will have a Wii U (as the price has dropped so low we know Nintendo won't sell it cheaper for at least a year), and the uninformed (who don't know much about the consoles or which they want) will be swept up by the PS4 and XB1 launches. If Nintendo couldn't explain what a Wii U was before, how can they now there is more competition? They really need Smash and Kart to get the message across.

After NSMBU flopped, I doubt that SM3DW is going to do any better.

They need a price cut, a new marketing push, and MK8/NEW Zelda/Smash Bros if they want to truly make an impact.

Otherwise they are simple going to be forgotten by the masses when the PS4 and Xbox One launch.

If we've learned anything from the 7th generation it's that Nintendo and the HD twins have very different userbase so people waiting for Nintendo games won't just go for the PS4X1 instead since what they are waiting for are Nintendo games.

Also, the HD twins will be in the same situation as the Wii U for a while. The devoted fans will buy the console at launch despite having few titles to choose from and while I do believe Sony and MS have a greater number of core followers than Nintendo, it still remains that many will take the wait and see approach and won't buy until the HD twins build a sizeable library.

Who are the ones waiting for Nintendo consoles though? I know there must be some, but given how cheap the Wii U has been sold for I would have thought most of the people who know they want Nintendo games would have picked one up.

Me for starters, there's many other Nintendo users in this thread who said they would buy this summer/fall, you can look in this thread http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=162414 for other users who are waiting on games to buy it. If you check the result of the poll from that thread:

Will you buy Wii U?

Yes 163 30.99%

No 110 20.91%

Undecided 63 11.98%

I already HAVE it! 190 36.12%

Total: 526

You see that there's a good portion of people who are in the "I'll buy it soon" state of mind. Almost as many as people who already have the console.

Wonderful 101 looked like the closest thing to a system seller coming out this year imo. 3D World and Pikmin 3, while fun looking games I'd love to play eventually, looked more like games you'd buy WHEN you already have the console ala NSMB and MK rather than something you'd by the console for, at least for the price I expect it to drop to ($250, $299 with 3D World pack in).

That said, I think there are also tons of people dying for an excuse to get the Wii U already because of their love of Nintendo, and I think these games serve as that excuse very nicely. There will also be plenty of younger people getting the console for christmas in anticipation of Smash next year when they normally couldn't have bought it with their own money.
