Forums - Gaming - Edge: DRM-free PS4 is a PR play – expect similar policies across both consoles, say sources

The DRM implemented on the two platforms atm is different.

SONY with likely be sticking to what is in the previous generation. Online game passes.

MS seems to be going with a bit more invasive game registration and 24 hours online authentication system.

Personally i'm ok with one time game passes for the online stuff, but then again a) I rarely use online stuff except the very rare exception online game b) you usually get one online pass with the purchase of the game new and I almost always buy new c) I'm not self entitled enough to believe that online stuff should be free.

I think I'll go with sony's official response to this. Too many rumors floating around. I thought I read somewhere that devs aren't the ones that wanted the DRM in the first place. This doesn't make much sense.

"SONEY LIED!"

OR

Or the publishers who are edges unnamed sources don't have any plans to implement the XBone's more invasive DRM. Which is by far the more likely.

I believe in honesty, civility, generosity, practicality, and impartiality.

Why do people struggle to differentiate between what a console demands and what a developer can demand.

If a developer demands that you sign into their servers once a day to continue to be able to play a game then Sony and the ps4 can't stop that.

It isn't complicated....

Man.. people can't even differentiate that Edge has asked 3rd party developers about this.. not Sony.. yet 90% of the posts in this thread are about: "but Sony said"

its complicated..

Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA - "No used game DRM, will be like PS3, online passes only if a publisher wants"

Anonymous rumour - "Will be DRM!"

...and people believe the latter why?

People (some M$ supporters including M$) are in full panic mode right now; so they just want to make the PS4 look bad.

I think jack tretton already clarified in an interview. He said it would be the same as the ps3 era. As in 3rd parties can choose to add online passes/whatever to games if they want.

Quote from Jack Tretton: "The easiest way to explain it is — if you understand how it works on PlayStation 3, then that’s the same way it will work on PlayStation 4. No changes there. We’ve been out for six and a half years. It’s the same experience."

For online yes... publishers will do everything they what.

For offilne... Sorry but nothing will happening.

*puts money back in wallet* I'm watching you Sony

EDIT: maybe I'm too trustful of Sony but I can't see Sony going back on their word after they really put their reputation on the line on the worldwide stage stating no DRM and then the used game policy video on youtube, the backlash would be greater than MS

Lol at certain people's and that site's wishful thinking, This is nothing more than speculation. If Sony do implement this, feel free to complain and judge them, but as it is right now, it's far from anything like Ms are doing.
