Should Nintendo Create More Studios?

Yes, they need more to ke... 198 72.53%

No, they have plenty as is 20 7.33%

They should try harder to... 41 15.02%

I have no opinion 14 5.13%

Total:273

They need to do all 3. 1) Recruit talent to create new first party studios 2) Continue with their partnerships with indie developers like Platinum 3) Strengthen relationships with third party publishers.

I guess the concern here is if Nintendo decides to expand into these genres, what would be left for third parties to bring to the table?

That's nothing to worry about. You just need to ask yourself this question: Right now when Nintendo doesn't make such games themselves, do third parties bring such games to the table?

I'd also add that third-parties' behavior indicates that they expect/await Nintendo to blaze a trail and create a market for a genre before they put their own toes in the water. So if Nintendo wants to create a vibrant FPS market on its consoles, it'll probably have to make two or three successful FPS's first.

Yes. And the vast majority of popular games (i.e. games that interest people) are third party.

Except for, you know, almost all the best-selling games of the previous generation.

I didn't say that the most popular games are third party. i said most games that are popular are third party.

I can draw you an overcomplicated diagram if that helps

They should let them focus on some new ip's, the number of studios is not the problem.

Appreciated, but not really necessary. I'm more lost at how that matters, in terms of the idea behind the discussion, i.e. I'm solidly behind KungKras on this one. Perhaps that might be a viable argument if you limit the discussion to the PS3 vs. 360 debate...but in light of the fact that the Wii missed out on the majority of popular third party titles* and still outsold the rival consoles, and by a ridiculous amount when the system was actually releasing games, I find it impossible to accept that statement as true.

Simply put, the public doesn't care if a game's first party or third-party, they just care if the box plays the games they want to play. And we saw last generation that the more popular games can draw more folks than the more popular games.

*For lack of a better phrase. The precise meaning is malleable, but let's assume we're on the same page for now.

The Wii sold the way it did mainly because of the controller, not so much the games. Nintendo's first-party games are always some of the best selling of their respective generation. That didn't save the GC or N64.

So you're asserting that it's the Wiimote that caused Mario Kart Wii to sell over 30 million (six times more than the Gamecube game), New Super Mario Bros Wii to sell 27 million, Wii Fit and Wii Fit+ to each separately sell over 20 million, etc.?

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I think the Wii sold the way it did because it captured the public's imagination. The whole idea of being able to play tennis by realistically swinging your arm, golf, bowling, driving, etc. just caught everyone's attention. That being said, the games were pretty solid, too. The launch line-up was pretty decent, and I recall that Wii Play came out in January/February along with WarioWare, which kept the software momentum going (the pack in Wiimote with Wii Play was immensely intelligent).
