I think the Wii sold the way it did because it captured the public's imagination. The whole idea of being able to play tennis by realistically swinging your arm, golf, bowling, driving, etc. just caught everyone's attention. That being said, the games were pretty solid, too. The launch line-up was pretty decent, and I recall that Wii Play came out in January/February along with WarioWare, which kept the software momentum going (the pack in Wiimote with Wii Play was immensely intelligent).
