Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony officially states that PlayStation 4 will not have DRM against used games

So 3rd parties will probably implement some sort of DRM but not 1st party games? At least that's what I got out of this article. Anyway I just hope publishers like Square Enix and Namco don't implement these policies even though I buy all of their games new anyway but still.

I don't think its nearly as bad when left to 3rd parties as everyone is making it out to be. We had something very similar this gen with online passes. Some publishers, especially EA implemented it into their games but many didn't. Activision never had any online passes on their best selling franchise, COD. So it only makes sense next gen will see some using DRM while others won't. Those who use DRM though will face the heat and it'll be upto them to decide whether its worth it or not.

This is a lot better than M$'s way where every game has DRM and its console wide. They may be wanting the cut of the used game pie when you trade in via their Azure system.

He was talking about tbe online pass thing right? You were talking about it being okay if Sony does it right? Well what is the "it" thay you are talking about? Sony fans complained about that online pass aswell. Did MS implement tbe online pass? If not, then you must have been referring to this new drm thing and thats why i brought it up

You didn't understand me. S.T.A.G.E could have just won the argument by saying "Well yes, Sony does a corporate lockdown on gamers as well, but far less than what Microsoft do".

But no. He had to prove that Sony is complete gaming-focused and it always does it right by justifying the online pass, saying "more than happy to pay for them". Now you come to me and tell me that Sony fans complained about that online pass. You're further helping me with my argument. S.T.A.G.E condones something he shouldn't, just because Sony does it.

Oh ok I see what you were saying lol

My bad though, Wright :)

So DRM for 3rd party games and online passes for first party games. Got it.

Online passes on PSN at least make some sort of sense because online multiplayer is free. I was shocked to learn some 360 games required online passes. So not only do you have to pay for the priviledge to play online multiplayer through Xbox Live, but you also had to pay to play online for individual used games with an online pass? How the fuck do people put up with that stuff?

No problem, buddy. I edited the original post, just to make clear that I don't accept what Microsoft is doing, in case that wasn't clear.

Get ready for Sony 1st party to not implement this, but the rest of 3rd parties will.

Anyways gives the Sony people a reason not to boycott the console now, but they'd better hold to their word and boycott the games that do require authentication.

I haven't bought an EA game in awhile.  ME3 probably and before that...probably a Madden.  I never made such a vow but unless I am absolutely positive a game will be good of course I will.  I won't be able to resell if I don't like it (which I do with most of my games cause I'm very selective about my permanent collection).  This policy will lead to less pre-orders and more dissatisfied customers before being reversed.

The thing is though now you can't lend those games out. Or do you mean permanent as in "no way I'm letting others touch these games".

I like to lend out my collection from time to time.

I don't trust many people with my games just a couple friends that have proven themselves responsible with them in the past.  I was talking about selling on Ebay.  I don't usually ask to borrow games other than when someone brings a sports game over (ironically that's the only EA stuff I've played but I'm not gonna buy them I'll just log into my friends account).

I'd rather not have to pay anything at all. Read my other answer.

I've already read your other answer and in the post you replied to and cut I made mention of why I don't care online pass does what it does.  Whether it's from Sony, EA, or whoever, the online pass restricts online only.  Not single player.  If I want to play online then I'll buy new or buy the online pass.  However, if I'm not interested in playing the online, or 20 years from now when online to PSN or XBL are no longer available.  I can still play the single player content

The only online pass that I'm not a fan of is on Alice Madness Returns where the online pass actually locks single player content, the original Alice, to where it's only playable on the account that has the pass.  I've refused to buy Alice Madness Returns for that very reason.  Microsoft has implemented this for all of their games on the Xbox One.  Because I'm a collector, I refuse to purchase the console.

If you look at the first post on this thread, if there's any third party passes that lock out playing the game on another account.  The game is essentially worthless, because single player in the future will be unplayable on a different machine.  So online passes, because of online, I don't care about, but single player content I do.  There's no way to preserve single player content when it's completely locked down.

I feel satisfied/relieved now and this confirms my decision to choose the PS4 this fall.

Just keep it simple sony.

I wonder how this stupid sh!t is going to work? The online pass just blocked the online portion but this could block the whole damn game SMFH.

..Idiots should have just asked these fucking retailers for a cut of the retail profits and everything would have been fine.

I dont feel like spending money on a game at the store only to then have to spend more cash on it when i get home.

FUCKING WAAAAAAACK!

atleast we dont have to deal with that always online check up sh!t.

Doesn't really mean a lot. Sony uses online pass, too, and judging by that, it's quite possible they'll do something against used games on their part as well. And if they do that, others will find it easier to follow. All this means there isn't a forced and universal DRM system against used games on the PS4.

Sorry to cut the rest of your post. I get what you're saying, and I understand it. I made it clear back in my other post with an edit that I don't approve what Microsoft is doing.

But this. Approach this point cautiously. What if it's Battlefield 3 what we're talking here? A game that's practically focused on multiplayer, whose singleplayer component last two hours and it's probably the most derivative excuse of a singleplayer? Yes, you can tell me that EA dropped the online pass. But my point stand still. What about games which are focused on multiplayer? Where's the fairness there? Online Pass should not exist, simple as that; it doesn't matter if it locks singleplayer content or the multiplayer aspect of a game. No one should condone it. That's my opinion.
