The reveal wasn't so bad, just too much TV and nothing else. It's all the talk that came afterwards that became a disaster.

They knew full well what gamers were concerned about and wanted clarity on. They even postponed the initial reveal, plenty of time to get it right. The outrage is a direct result of what was said during and directly after the reveal. How can you not call that a disaster.

Then they should have just held off until E3. Setting aside the disasterous details that came out after the reveal. The conference was a complete waste of time. The truth of the matter is hardcore gamers are the ones that will be buying the XB1 initially. The mainstream consumer that these features are ultimately targetting won't be snagging the console until year two or three at the earliest.

I have to question MS' strategy on the whole. Instead of building interest in the Xbox One, they've managed to kill interest in the console. Some of their most ardent consumers are have been completely turned off. In addition to going after new consumers, they are going to have to convince some of their most hardcore fans to give them the time of day.

well first of all it was a reveal of the console, weeks before E3 second, and it had been month since the buzz was going around that it would be a media box third, it's been even years, but it was clear that reveal would be very little news about games and all about what you have on top of games....

because bottom line it will have a pretty similar library to PS4 and they wanted to showcase the rest of the services they have.... it wasn't rocket science to have guest that weeks before the event....

so in that regard their reveal was one of the best reveal in console tech since maybe the iPhone reveal in mobile phones....

I wouldn't call it a disaster, but it was kinda bad. Unless you're the type of person who loves TV, multimedia stuff, FIFA/Madden and Call of Duty.. there wasn't all much there to be excited about. What came across as weird to me was the mixed messages I got from watching the reveal. MS said that they were still about the gamers, but throughout the whole conference they talked mostly about things which have absolutely nothing to do with games. Throwing in "we have 15 exclusives! Wait for E3!!" doesn't say much when they don't even bring them at the reveal. For all we know they could be mostly Arcade/Kinect games.

And, it was really disappointing that they didn't go into detail with the specs of the console. Seeing as this is a hardware reveal and these machines will be sticking around for the next half a dozen (or so) years, you would think that they'd at least show/talk about whats inside, powering the device. MS could have elaborated on the specs, showed off some in real gameplay footage and demo's to demonstrate what the machine is actually capable of. But instead, we got some quick, vague, bullet points on the specifications and a lot of pre-rendered/in game cut scenes.

I'll be frank, Microsoft should have waited it out a little longer for E3.

It wasn't a disaster but it was very unclear that this was not intended for gamers prior to the presentation, so I understand some gamers feeling left behind during it.

On the flipside, it should be clear to anyone who isn't purely obsessed by games and does things outside of gaming that this product has a lot of potential for being insanely popular. They need to get rid of the anti-consumer measures that were rumored after the show by means of a proper firmware update or prior to launch and it should do very well I think.

Also, @OP, I think that gamers take too much importance in the media of entertainment devices nowadays. That needs to change.

Majority of 'core gamers' vilified the Kinect as well, yet it basically gave the 360 second wind in the real world.

It wasn't a disaster, just wasn't very impressive.

People who think is was so horrible really need to go and check out the wii console reveal (just a box), or the Wii U console reveal (1 actual game), or the 360's reveal...

Compared to the PS4's it was very lacking but by normal standards it was decent. Although the games weren't impressive there were a few there and we got an idea of how the system would operate and things it will be able to do. People are acting like it won't have the support of every major 3rd party. Its the natural progression of the 360, rely on timed 3rd party exclusives and have a few tentpole 1st party titles here and there.

Used game issue aside, the internt is acting a fool over the event. Everyone saying it was terrible will 100% be watching the E3 press conference. So ultimately it doesn't matter what they thought of the event, in 2 weeks it will be irrelevant.

No. Or yes. Whichever one means it was the worst thing I've never seen, because I didn't watch it.

It was a disaster. But 6 months away, you can only go up....
