Forums - Gaming - Mainstream Media loves the Xbox One - Are "hardcore" gamers becoming irrelevant?

Will the Xbox One be successful?

Yes 68 28.10%

Maybe 63 26.03%

No 111 45.87%

Weren't Sony fans trying to say PS3 is worth the money because it's also a Blu-ray player, back in the day? I very much get that vibe from the media hub talk for the Xbone.

I think the reality is that gamers buy consoles. The PS3 has been overwhelmingly bought by gamers. Very few people bought PS3 solely or mainly because it plays Blu-ray movies. The Xbone will be no different. Gamers will buy it, and gamers will use the media hub features when they're not gaming.

This isn't likely to be a Wiimote blue ocean phenomenon where people hitherto uninterested in games are going to be buying Xbone in their millions.

Basically I see nothing in Xbone that will attract Wii or PS3 gamers over, and not much that will get PC gamers onboard. I think there are a lot of one console wonders among those who bought a Wii, so there isn't truly a 99 million customer base that's interested in hopping into a new generation.

I see this coming generation as being largely a 33/33/33 spilt, if Nintendo can get its Wii U act together. Otherwise I could see this generation being 40/40/20. And the total sales across all three being somewhat below PSWii360. I think it's highly possible this current generation has been the peak generation for home consoles.

This is what makes me think that even though I find the Xbox One's current direction totally boring and not my thing that it's going to be a success anyway and would have to be my current bet for the best sales next gen. I doubt most people will know or care about the things the forums have been blowing up about lately and the TV thing could be a huge bonus to casual sales. If I had to bet I think it'll be like the Wii success: obviously the best sales, but not the first choice of the majority of the hardcore gamers.

It'll be interesting to see what they show at E3 (and whether or not they repeat anything from this conference or they completely skip it over like some have been suggesting) and how this next generation plays out in general.

There is one pretty major difference between the Wii and the One.

Price.

The Wii launched at $250.

That's a fair point, it might be difficult for MS to use the same strategy of capturing the mainstream gamer if they price themselves out of it.  But because of those old rumors about MS doing a subscription model I think they might be able to make it work.

...

I think the Xbox One can be a very successful financial endeavor for Microsoft. But somehow it still doesn't convert me into a Halo/COD/NFL fan. I also do think it can appease both the hardcore and mainstream, but I don't see it being the primary choice for most hardcore gamers. And no matter how financially successful or popular a console is, it doesn't mean it's for everyone and necessarily better. Having other viable choices is what really matters.

Well MS is the most realistic one that gaming isn't a really viable business which the recent years have shown.. there are just not that enough gamers to sustain the gaming industry as it is right now.. by creating an enormous target audience which they can "wow" them they are in better position then Sony and Nintendo.. They could lose 20 million "hardcore" gamers to Nintendo and Sony but gain 50 million "mainstream" buyers..

Pretty much yes

When you have fanbases that have elements (vocal elements) that are stuck in the past, who want nothing to change, who want the old guard to rule.... you will get reactions based on those starting points. Its largely irrelevant as the last gen proved.

The gaming media is  a mouthpiece of fanboys.  Most gaming journalists ARE fanboys.  Most gaming journalists are also bad journalists.

The Xbox ONE will be a MASSIVE success. Pre-ordered mine this morning.

Is it a little less hysterical here today? lol

I do wonder how some fans will get out of that corner they have painted themselves into when there is little to chose between the PS4 and One experience? Should be fun.

It will be even harder if Nintendo get out Fit/Sports/Kart around the launch of One... With a cut.

The sub model will be interesting to see though if they go for it. Didnt they already try it once with the 360?

The mainstream media doesn't know about the used games issue and once every 24 hour online situation. MS never reported it during the conference. If they did...they would be in trouble, but they played it smart. The masses will buy into it.

I wouldn't say that the media doesn't know the "used game  issue." The media is not making facts out of something that is still not confirmed. Reality is that this is a PS oreinted website and the majority of posters here will twist everything into negative news to favor their favorite console. At least the media gets that.

The reality is they were covering the event and it was never brought up. If they didnt bring it up before that means they dont care about all areas of gaming.

Because it's more of a general media machine than a gaming console, which isn't a bad thing but would explain why the non/casual-gamers like it but gamers are disappointed generally speaking.

I was just on a major sports website and they had the trailer up for the new EA Sports games. It said right in the headline they were Xbox One games.

In the comments section someone brought up it was always online and he wouldnt buy it because of that. He was then collectively bashed with people saying that was ridiculous and in 2013 you should expect things to be connected to the internet. I dont think mainstream mass market gamers will care AT ALL about it being online
