Forums - Gaming Discussion - EA upset with Nintendo for not blocking used games? Possible pressure from EA for Sony to follow?

I personally think that Microsoft sought the partnership with EA to gain more access to the sports audiences, particularly with Fifa (which could help them in Europe) and Madden. I'm still doubtful that Microsoft is going to block used games, but I guess we'll see in the coming months.

That FIFA mode being exclusive to XB1 seemed like a threat to Sony IMO.

Didn't EA just say like a month ago how they were no longer interested in pursuing DRM?

That was because online passes are now being implimented on a console level basis, and not just on a game to game basis. It's not just for multiplayer anymore either, it's for any game that is bought used. You have to pay a fee on Xbox One if you want to even start up a used game.

So yeah, I suppose I was a fool for thinking EA were actually righting their wrong. I guess the others were right about it all being part of an even more horrible setup.

Sony said they wouldnt block used games, but it left it up to the individual publishers.

That means EA can probably do that for their games, but they wont be doing it for their own.

I still think its amazing. More than ever i wont buy anymore EA games. I might even skip on bioware games altogether if this ends up beeing the case. Cant support or tolerate that kind of initiative.

Ah! Nintendo isnt sounding so bad now is it? :p

This is exactly it.

EA has been pushing hard for locked games to an account as happens with Origin and your PC.

Nintendo likely agreed with this initially and then backed out at some point in 2012. Then EA removed all support from Nintendo, purposely gimped their first few games to get what they needed to back out of contractual agreements for various titles.

MS and I'm sure Sony have already agreed to this. MS is just first to comment directly on it while Sony simply dodged the questions.

This very well may be the only reason Nintendo gets screwed by 3rd parties... or at least those that greatly want to force the removal of the used gaming market.

I thought Sony outright said they're not blocking used games.

Maybe EA just doesn't want to force tablet features to their ip(plus the fact WII u is barely on pace with vita sales)

With Smartglass on the Nextbox tablets can be used as a tablet controller. That's definately not it. Wouldn't make sense either way.

For once Nintendo's online attitude isn't looking too bad...

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

No, they said they were dropping Online Passes.

With Steam and Origin on PCs, they don't need to.

With this new key tied to an account system that MS and likely Sony will implment, they won't need to.

Basically, the platforms have made online passes obsolete.

Nintendo is the only one who has not implemented a system like this. Nintendo is the only one being blacklisted by EA. Coincidence? I think not.

I feel it's got to be more than that. I could understand them just not making an effort, but to not even rehash old games like they are doing on the Vita seem like there is something seriously wrong.

I feel we shouldn't condemn EA quite yet, it could just be their new CEO with a new direction for the company?

They said its up to the publishers and dodged questions on it almost entirely.

I feel you're ignoring the obvious 9001lb gorilla in the room.
