Forums - Sony - How much money Sony really lost with the PS3

I just wanted to makle sure everybody gets that the PS3 was and is a financial nightmare for Sony. And the denial in this thread shows that it was neccessary to do so. Even if the PS3 manages it past the Wii, Sony still lost this gen, because Nintendo made a shitload of money with it. Heck even MS made way more money with the 360 than Sony with the PS3.

your arm chair analasys ,and quite poor one at that, leaves much to be desired. you are placing alot of blame on the ps3 that you, and anyone else except for sony, wouldnt know about. did ps3 lose money? obviously. i dont think anyone would argue with you there. is the ps3 the sole purpose for losing billions in the gaming division and if it was does sony think of it as an investment? well thats where you have absolutly no leg in the race

2 things has to be admitted; PS3 did in fact an incredible come back after it's fiasco of a launch. It did quite poorly to begin with, but turning that ship around, and now being a VERY close third is very impressive. That's one thing

The other thing we have to admit is that PS3 cost Sony A LOT of money. It's profitable now, and it'll continue to make money for some years to come, but it'll never TRULY offset the money that it lost. It might have earned back every cent and dime it initially lost, but it will never be a big financial success. Never. It has lost too much money for that.

What we as gamers all can hope for, is that Sony learned a great deal of things by the PS3; let's hope PS4 kicks ass!

We keep getting told that it did so awful at the start yet launch aligned we are also told it outsold the 360 so it obviously was never that bad to begin with.  Its a lie spread by Sony fans to make the situation appear worse than it was.

What an incredibly flawed and illogical post. I wont even tuch on your flawed assumption that the Ps3's poor start was perpetuated by Sony fans (Whoops guess I will). However, your you jumped to a conclusion tht isn't even supported by the premesis. Because one bad start beat another bad start then it s't a bad start? How completely and utterly ridiculous that thought process is.

I AM DONE.

It must hurt being proven wrong time and time again yet still try to save face and argue that you are right.

How much is Sony losing on every Vita though? That's the question I want to know now.

According to this article they profit on each Vita sold by a decent amount.

thats just raw manufacture, shipping and packing as well as adverstising cost o lot by themselves and arent included.

There probably is still some profit, shipping, packing and advertising can't cost $90 per system can it?

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

From what I know, they are making a profit now with the yen and all, but still selling at a loss in Japan. Going for a small loss-make up loss with mem card approach here.

Law of diminishing returns. When you don't sell alot you don't make a lot. Profit isn't a fixed variable. I wouldn't be surprised if they were more profitable with the vita with a price cut.

Long term yes but since Sony is a big broke company so close to death a steady small profit is better than a risky large one.

not suprised sony lost so much money with the ps3. The formula of having a high end console that costs lets say 800 to manufacture and 600 to retail is digging a huge hole for them to dive into, ps3 sold at a major loss.. The wii was weak but proftible is why i worry ps4 is going to make the same mistake.

It's not. If the console is sold at a loss it won't be anywhere near $200. I'd say PS4 will sell anywhere from $50 loss to $50 profit. It all depends on the price point which I expect to be betwee $400-$500. Then there's stuff like Playstation Plus and Gaikai which will only add to profits.

Gaikai will add to profits?! For Gaikai Sony has to acquire a lot of hardware, has to make expensive contracts with very big global peering partners and cdn-providers, probably they have to put up several datacentres all over the world and you say it will only add to profits? I doubt so.

Didn't they buy Gaikai for like $350m? They already have data centers and all that stuff. Anyway that's now what I menat by "it can only add to profits". I meant once its available to the public to subscribe to. I'm just wondering how deep PSN integration goes here. Do PSN Servers = Gaikai Servers now? Will Playstation Plus include Gaikai feature access or is it a different service altogether? Either way, the tech won't be free to use.  So it will be profitable in the long-run.
