Forums - Nintendo - Predictions on Wii U price cut

When will Wii U get a price cut and by how much?

I think Aug/Sept alongside Wind Waker HD, 8gb-$200(discontinued), 32gb-$250

I'm thinking at E3, so June.

Nintendo Land + free Dragon Quest X digital download w/1-2 months of free online play might not be a bad bundle for $250.

Then maybe different bundles for holiday 2013 (New Super Mario Bros U, etc.).

I think it will depend on the price structure for neXtBox/PS4.

If they are close to $500, Nintendo will stick it out and focus on bundling.

If they do subscription models below $400, then I'd expect a price cut near their launch. Probably $50 maximum.

Keep in mind the 3DS had a BIG margin when it was selling for $250 such that when it was reduced, it was barely losing money... kinda the point where Wii U is NOW. So any cut in Wii U price is putting the hardware further into the red, something Nintendo doesn't do. PLUS, they have stated in the last few investor meetings their goal is to return to continued profitability unlike the previous year.

A price cut will ONLY happen if they see it as a competitive move due to the rest of next-gen being priced very low. We'll see tons of bundling first until Wii U costs go down sometime next year.

Next year.

I was basing the amount dropped around 3DS roughly 1/3 of its price reduced but u make a good point about how much it would be losing

Nintendo has promised to be profitable this year, and is already selling the Wii U at a loss. I don't think they will risk breaking that promise by increasing that loss. They will count on a strong Holiday lineup to build momentum and push sales of Wii U. I don't think it'll get a price cut before April 2014.

I think whether or not people want to admit it or not, the Wii U is very much in direct competetion with the PS3 and 360, probably even moreso than the PS4/720. PS4/720 is a different market for the really loyal/core parts of the Sony/MS fanbase and there probably won't even be enough inventory to supply to the market beyond that group until spring 2014.

The rumblings of a $99.99 XBox 360 is much problematic for Nintendo, IMO it cuts the legs off some demographics they are banking on like the family/kids and "casual looking for something else to upgrade to from their Wii" market. I think a lot of those folks will look at the 360 and see it's half the price, with the same or better third party games and similar performance/features otherwise and choose to get that.

no price drop this year. people never learn you seem to forget how stuborn nintedo can be!

I dunno they hit the panic button on the 3DS pretty darn quick, and that was selling better than the Wii U without the benefit of a new Mario game.

Depends on four factors.

1. The Yen. If the Yen continues to fall, then profitability rises, making a lower price-point more practical.

2. Rate of Sale. If the Wii U maintains, or sees less than a 50% increase in its baseline between now and Autumn the situation will be desperate enough for them to consider such drastic options.

3. Prominence of Next Gen Xbox/PS. If either console manages to price itself within $100 ($50 with a subsidized box) of the Wii U, Nintendo may have to respond.

4. 3DS Sales. If the 3DS manages to hit its stride this year, it could bring in enough to offset the losses from the Wii U, at least partially.

All of these factors will tie into the decision, but have of them won't be known till E3, and the rest till autumn, at the earliest. As such, any estimate of when and how much would be pretty premature.

That said, if I had to guess, I'd say $70 off the Deluxe, discontinuation of Basic, during Q2 of next year.
