Forums - Gaming - Michael Pachter: ‘I Don’t Get Japanese Developers’

Everybody should be agreeing with Patcher. I dont get them either. We have tons of great Japanese developers with With great global brand legacy creating these Japan focused anime fetish games. When their not developing these Japan focused anime fetish games they're letting other developers ruin their IP's and damage their reputation, Not localizing anything, forgetting they have a vast amout of dormant IP's, taking centuries to actually complete projects, just general sitting on their asses as they let west pull the wool over everybodies eyes and claim false innovation. Japan is a mess because they have forgotten how to create global games.

team ico (the last guardian).

nintendo (pikmin 3)

..needs to be added to the list.  seriously, start listing off all the vaporware in the industry than calculate the percentage that is japan based.

but yes, SE is most of it.

Why did you list those two? Weren't you talking about purely sales over-estimation?

not purely.  just bad business practice.  pikmin 3 was announced almost 6 years ago.  the last guardian more like 7 years..  too long.

Okay, I agree with you on that then. I was just confused because I thought you were only talking about the sales aspect.

I don't know how many of you actually watched his video. As often as he says stuff that annoys me with regards to his view of how companies should run, he is even more often the victim of being quoted out of context to create controversial topics by the gaming media. In this case he was said how he doesn't get the Japanese when asked why SE doesn't release FF7 remake despite the huge fan interest. I think even SE fans would agree with him on that one.

Also, he wasn't simply praising 'Merica and hating on Japan, calling them stupid. He said MS made the wrong move at the beginning by labeling themselves as hardcore only with the original Xbox, while the Wii, even though it made money, didn't manage to hold consumer interest in buying enough software outside of the usual few suspects, and it eventually led to the Wii U, which he considers a mistake. He actually praised Sony for having the best console strategy for appealing to the core and also going for the "Everyone" market by releasing a huge variety of games. And as far as I know, Sony is a Japanese company.

It's fine to not like someone, but taking things out of context or disregarding info is just wrong.

I wish Japanese developers would simply go back to utilizing art designs and styles in their games that appealed to all audiences worldwide, not just a niche audience who like emo-looking effeminate characters in their games.  That alone would solve many of their problems... not every Japanese game needs to look like it was based on an Anime or Manga property.  Add to that the ridiculous dialogue and overly melo-dramatic story and character elements that usually accompany said Japanese games, and it's no wonder why alot of people don't "get" Japanese games.

And as for the companies themselves... when a certain major Japanese developer / publisher blames the three best games they've released in the past year (all Western developed) for failing to meet their financial goals, despite the sales success of all three games (especially Tomb Raider, a reboot of a long-dead franchise), people again start to question the rationale and business strategies behind Japanese gaming companies.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I agree with most of what you said in your post, but lets not pretend that Japanese developers are the only ones pursuing innovation in the industry while Western devs are just looking for the next big Hollywood blockbuster-like cash grab.  Besides Nintendo's Wii and its success in fully realizing motion controls and introducing new audiences to gaming, what innovative stuff have Japanese companies and developers done in the last decade or so?  Indroduce movie-playback capabilities to videogame consoles?

I totaly agree with you.

Japanese developers need to look at Platinum Games and learn how to do it right. Japanese games can still have that Japanese style while appealing to the rest of world and it doesn't take 6 years and $200m to do it.
