I propose waiting until this Q4. Then, Pokemon X/Y can be the crown and Zelda 3D can be the throne!

There are direct competitors coming like Nvidia Project Shield - if you want to count that atrocity as a handheld of course - and the back then called "true next gen portable" ( The underdog, less powerful, with less impressive tech demos, with the lesser features, with no unreal engine support, is the king. Deal with it or deal with it.
I think it is deserved.

Who cares, both vita and 3ds are good to me! I'm not much of a handheld fanboy but i'll support both for when shield comes out.
The 3DS doesn't care whether or not people are prepared to declare it the "winner." It's still pretty early in the generation, but the sales gap and release schedule speaks for itself.

3DS didn't win, Vita lost.
Nintendo really set themselves up for failure with the 3DS. All their early decisions were wrong, if the Vita had gotten the support promised, it would have been closer, but it got nothing, and continues to get nothing.
Nintendo finally pulls their head out of their rear this year, but now there is no competition. They've already won, and main rush of games is just hitting.
It has the highest sales crown certainly wrapped up, not that it means anything.

) PS Vita is the closest thing you can have to a dreamcast sales wise. Being it the only direct competitor and I don't see any other platform coming on the handheld market that is going to pull off such numbers as 3DS, and good looking colours, I think it is the right time to separate the winner from everyone else.
