Forums - Gaming - What Determines a Console Will be a Success?

What exactly guarantees a console will be a success at launch as well as overall?

according to professional sites like vgc or n4g it is the name "sony" whic guarantees a consoles' success. others are sometimes "allowed" to come close (because of a not-so-good start by sony, of course - others are always worse) but they will have to live with the obvious taunt of the elite race.

There's no recipe for guaranteed success, but:

- Broad and appealing software lineup not playable on other systems people would choose over it.

- It is perceived as a clear upgrade (by most people) over the last gen.

- Reasonable price.

- Belongs to a brand people trust.

- Mistakes from competitors.

1. Reasonable price for what you are getting
2. Excellent 1st and 3rd party support
3. Decent services Eg PSN, Xbox Live
4. Reliable (360 went past this!)
5. Appeal to the public

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

Good indicators that a console will be a success are:

No hardware flaws, such as faulty processors, being a hardware addon, unnessecary difficulty of programming, etc.

Acceptable price level.

Breadth of game library. (How many genres are adequately represented on the system)

Killer apps. (Games that become so popular, that people buy the system in droves for them, like Sonic 2, Halo, Tetris, Super Mario Bros or Wii Sports)

honestly, that really doesnt matter much. look at the ps2, a bitch to develop for. ps vita, one of the easiest consoles to develop for. now look at the sales.

Of course it's not an iron clad rule, but these things can affect how a console performs. PS2 was riding on the massive momentum of the PS1, that built its momentum partly because it was very easy and cheap to develop for and its competitors weren't.  PS3 in its early days did lose a few devs because of its architecture. So I added it in because it might be an indicator.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Mass market price, casual appeal, and developer support.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

They are two different angles to view success.

From the gamers (consumers) point of view it is a combination of many of the things mentioned: Games, value, hardware etc.,

From the company's perspective it is sales. That's it.

A company can build the best possible console and give it all the support possible. If not many people buy the console it is then a financial failure.

Therefore from my point of view the wii was a business success as it sold the most but yet the x360 and PS3 were more successful as they gave the bigger variety of games, had superior hardware, online and features.

Ultimately it depends on ones definition of "success".

It's a simple formula really:

-Lowest Price.
-Launching first.
-A killer app.
-Exclusive good games.
-Mainstream features and appeal.
-3rd party support.

To dominate the market you need some or all of the above. You don't need all, but they all will help you. The more the better.
