They are two different angles to view success.
From the gamers (consumers) point of view it is a combination of many of the things mentioned: Games, value, hardware etc.,
From the company's perspective it is sales. That's it.
A company can build the best possible console and give it all the support possible. If not many people buy the console it is then a financial failure.
Therefore from my point of view the wii was a business success as it sold the most but yet the x360 and PS3 were more successful as they gave the bigger variety of games, had superior hardware, online and features.
Ultimately it depends on ones definition of "success".
